in ATI control panel theres a tab that shows AGP 2X 4X 8X and off - see if your boxes are greyed out
the best way to check is to see if you can surf with an el cheapo PCI VGA card, or an old Geforce - one monitor

Yep, greyed out.... Only 8x and Off are available (currently set on 8x)

What does that mean?

try getting the ATI Tool and search for artifacts. this will pick up anything wrong with your video card, as you said some corrupt files were found in HL2.

thats good it means agp drivers are functioning

you could use Sisoft Sandra to check around your system to see if everything is working properly - like your HDD still in DMA mode.

Edit - have you tried with just a single monitor??
Have you tried AGP 4X setting in BIOS - if there is one?

Well i'll be a rats ass.

Ran the tool (didnt touch the clocking mind you) and it was showing no artifacts after 45 seconds or so... so i started moving the mouse around and sure enough.... every 2-3 seconds it would freeze... the entire time the artifact checker was running....

I let it go for another minute or two, close the program and load up firefox.... as soon as i click on the first link, the whole system freezes for about 15-20 seconds.... then goes black, but this time rather than restart one monitor turns back on and its all garbled (beyond the point of recognition)

Looks like its the video card then.... Any reccomendations from here?

Ok, decided im gonna try a windows reinstall anyway to clear up any driver questions....

Any reccomendations on which catalyst drivers to use?

EDIT: Welp, maybe its not the video card..... I wonder if it could be something else... I downloaded the latest catalyst drivers (20 meg file) and while firefox finished downloading and was saving to my desktop, the system was jerking around for 5-6 seconds while it did it.

your system is fvcked man. Just download everything you need ASAP and format that thing or atleast try another HDD with another operating system in there. IF all is well, then it's a software issue though that is very odd for all of this to be happeneing.

Just thought i would post an update... Formatted 2-3 days ago, slowly added one piece of hardware at a time and tested for stability...

The stutter is gone! Musta just been a software issue or a corrupt driver somewhere....

Thanks for all the help, its greatly appreciated :D
