Because so few people are getting packages in hawaii as opposed to New York or CA. They might have to fly out there one day just for 20 packages or so.

Or they just charge a premium to screw you guys over anyway? Businesses just tend to charge more to some people or for any service anyway.

yeah...population very small compared to NY
and I agree on the premium.

I worked in freight for many years though, and we got quite a bit of freight via FedEX and UPS
agreed on the
screwed over too.....oh well

The reason is because UPS and Fedex do not allow ground packages to Hawaii, only two day air or better. And who uses them the most, businesses. It really makes no difference to a business that they're paying an extra $30-$50 for stock worth several thousand dollars coming in. BTW, you CAN ship ground with UPS and Fedex and it actually goes on the airplane -- guess why, they fly back out to the mainland nearly empty. Very few goods ever leave Hawaii compared to what comes in. That's partially why air freight cannot be compared to say, NY to CA, the balance of goods exchange is more even. Not so in Hawaii. The aircraft has to pay bills flying both ways.

Now do the smart thing and use USPS -- you do know priority mail packages go exclusively through Fedex now.

1) always go for USPS Priority when trading in FS/FT.

2) Shop at dealers such as svc.com which offer USPS Priority shipping as an option.

3) Shop at zipzoomfly.com. they have free 2nd day for most items, which translates to $10 for shipment to Hawaii and Alaska. Not bad for 2nd day which is usually $20+ at Newegg.

Uhhh.......

I find this thread quite alarming. You mean you can't understand why it costs more to ship to Alaska and Hawaii.. particularly Hawaii?

Everything costs more there for a reason.

Transportation costs are a big part of the cost of any commodity.

This is true, and should be the end of this thread. to the OP: See my suggestions above for the optimal shopping experience, or move to the mainland :p

I wonder if I stick some ram in a bottle, then throw it in the ocean, if some lucky person in Hawaii will find it.

and you should see the prices of GAS here!

Maybe that makes my RAM worth more too? lol

*edit*
I just thought maybe someone here could shed some light on WHY the shipping was
more, when the flight distance is basically the same as a cross Continental US route
for example.

Hey, I feel your pain. I also live in Hawaii (oahu), and get stuck with some killer shipping costs. Shipping is more because the demand is less. If there a plane leaving NY going to Cali, its not like there will be a shortage of things to throw on the flight. With hawaii its a different story. Also, the flight even from cali to hawaii is longer than Cali to NY...so imagine shipping something from the east coast to hawaii...its gonna be more expensive. The prices suck, but there are a few alternatives (Personal Touch Comp. across from compusa downtown) for one.

I buy 90% of my hardware from Newegg, and place an order about 1-2 times per month, so im about fed up with it too. I can't wait to get off this rock and back to the mainland, so I don't have to wait an extra day and screwed with these shipping prices. I don't think gas is that bad here at all though.

holy crap, didn't realize you live in hawaii :)

BTW: DO NOT GO TO PERSONAL TOUCH COMPUTERS. their prices are more than even newegg with shipping, and their service sucks completely. I prefer Byteware if I need to buy something locally, or actually i'd rather even go to compusa than personal touch :p

Ah theres no such thing as 2nd day here in hawaii. We may pay for 2nd day, but FedEX and UPS both add an extra day on that time, so its really 3 days (minimum). Ive only gotten one shipment in on the 2nd day, and thats when I had it shipped overnight (cost a fortune).

You mean FedEx can overnight a package to the middle of Russia, but it takes 2 days to get to Hawaii?

Overnight service is guaranteed, no matter where you are, and comes with a hefty premium from or to Hawaii. 2-day to Hawaii and Alaska is not guaranteed, whereas it is guaranteed to the lower 48. that is the difference.

you can walk from one end of any island to the other in less than an hour.

And don't forget that all of the islands are interconnected by bridges so we can walk the whole island chain in just under 3 hours... you can do it in under 1 if you run really fast. It saves you a fortune on plane fares. ;)

Well, the one time I payed for overnight here it took 2 days. Just speaking from experience.
