Why does Gmail have to suck?

Look folks, I *like* google. I think Gmail was ahead of its time. However, that is talking in the PAST TENSE. Yahoo develops and delivers simple and easy to use solutions, faster than Google seems to because they are spread so widely.

I will give it a little bit of time... but not too much. Getting tired of not having contacts, calendar, or a PDA 🙁

I'm just irritated because if I get a PDA... it's as good as useless with Gmail.

You can sync a PDA with outlook. Outlook supports pop3 accounts. Gmail has pop3 forwarding. Problem solved.

Gmail > Yahoo

With a single thread you have told me more about yourself then you can possible know.

Here is a hint, you can have Gmail do everything you just described it couldn't do. Perhaps you should use GOOGLE and the marvelous search capabilities you seem to understand that it has, and figure things out before you make youself look any more ignorant.

Perhaps the problem is that he uses Yahoo and it is easy and straightforward. No search required. Whereas with Google you also have to use their search engine in order to fully use their email program?

Also, how could he look 'more ignorant'. If he doesn't know about the calendar he can't look more ignorant about the calendar, right?

People go insane when defending Google. It actually cracks me up. What is it about Google that brings out the fanboy in so many people here? It has been like this for so long. I can't say much since I do use Gmail and don't have any issues with it but I've never been so vehement in defending it. 😛

I could understand the whole "easy" thing if this was a "Grand Parents on Computers forum" or perhaps an Apple forum, but the fact that it requires a bit of in depth navigating shouldn't turn people off on a tech forum. Just my opinion I guess.

The fact the Gmail supports POP3, as I understood it at least, is a widely known fact among any tech person. If you read the FAQ all the info is there for you, its not like your navigating through the depths of an abyss to find the required information. You set up Gmail through Outlook, boom you have a calander. Thunderbird, use the sunbird extension. Syncing through a PDA is done the same way.

I used to use Yahoo and I liked it before they started sending me emails saying they were getting rid of POP3 access but I could still have it for $9.95 a month. I still have a yahoo email account or two, but Gmail is just superior in all ways.

Yup, I refused to use Gmail until they added POP3. I hate web based email with a passion especially Gmails since it was constantly giving me the 'Loading' (or whatever the word is) message and then loading to a blank screen. It could have been a problem with Firefox or anything but I had nothing but issues before POP3. Smooth sailing now.

I feel the same way for the most part. But Gmail was the first Webmail that I truly liked to use, even before they added POP3. Using the Gmail manager extension through firefox allows me to login to my seperate gmail accounts easily, and also know within a second if I even need to check my mail. Then I don't have to login, I'm just logged in. Gmail also seems 10x quicker then yahoo, it just reacts instantly.

And then there is the fact that you can just send yourself invite after invite, setting up account after account - and then use other extensions and/or tools to utilize that massive space for just about anything.

Perhaps you really do have to be a bit of geek to appreciate all of the finer aspects of gmail. I would expect to see "Why does Gmail have to suck?" threads on some forums just not this one.

I don't like Outlook.. I switch between a Windows, Mac, and Linux world -- Outlook isn't the ideal solution. If I keep it all online then I don't have to worry about missing an email here or there because I downloaded it.

Why do you need more time? You can do all of those things now, and with Gmail.

Do you have reading comprehension issues? Or did you just pass over all of my replies? I guess I wouldn't blame you if you did

And they're still adding features to it... including a calendar which will hopefully be out soon (the website is there: calendar.google.com).

What, is removing the 'beta' going to suddenly make it complete?

Plenty of companies with 'completed' products are constantly adding features to their products.

So again, why would it make you happier if they simply removed the 'beta'. People complain all the time that they're using software that should still be in beta... and here is a company that's not releasing anything until it's 100% complete in their mind, and we get whiners like you.

Try this: http://www.planetnz.com/palmheads/linux.php for linux and Versamail can sync with Macs. Thunderbird could work as well.

How many features has google added to Gmail in the past 6 months? It's still a beta.

They added POP3 and some lame messaging... Whoop dee doo. It would be awesome if they had a calendar, because then I wouldn't have to use Yahoo.

I don't know about scribe but I don't like anything you mentioned:
1. Having you logged in all the time means that your email account is unsecure, anybody with access to your computer can easily log in to your account.

2. With Yahoo! you don't even need an invite, therefore you don't need to send yourself an invite to make another email address. Just go upto the page and make a new one. And now they even support dot email adresses officially, and are asking you to make mutliple accounts, officially.

3. Everybody hates the big guys in one way or another, and GMail seems to be the big guy of the moment for web-based emails. Even hotmail was bashed, hell, i'm pretty sure even Yahoo! was bashed before, and all this bashing is just going to continue.

Think again.

doesnt yahoo have like a half decade or more headstart on gmail as far as webmail goes and the only t hing you can claim is one, maybe two non essential features that yahoo offers and google does not.

in conclusion i think your an idiot.

I use gmail as my primary account. I like it, but I don't get why they add all these "features" yet ignore simple things that can easily improve it.

Yea, gmail chat is cool and everything, but they add stuff like that, yet I still can't just click one frigging button or go to one folder to see all my unread mail. Only way to see all your unread is select unread, star it, and then view the starred mail (or use is:unread). I can't get a simple way to view unread mail?

BAHH... Google is great but they are great at SEARCH. Yahoo seems to have the market cornered on all the fun stuff. 🙁

Any advice appreciated.

Just forward your gmail to your yahoo account if you are really all that enamered with their feature set. Nothing wrong with that.

I don't have a problem with that... the unread mail are bolded, and they're in the infolder. When i'm done with an email, i typically trash it or move it, although there are lots in my inbox still... but finding the unread one has never been a problem, because a quick glance will tell me which are unread because they're bolded.

What is non-essential to YOU, is not non-essential to ME. I require the use of a calendar and right now I'm getting by with Sunbird, but it involves me remote desktopping into my home so I can view/update it. I don't want to have to screw around with 3 different PCs trying to keep them synced -- which is why web based calendaring/email is so appealing!

Either way... I will get the process underway and probably start moving my email account. Yahoo has a lot of pluses and the fact I'm paying for it makes me think in THEORY, that they will listen to things I say where with Gmail... I'm not a 'customer' and there's no reason to listen to me.

Not when they are many pages deep. I get a ton of email in my gmail account, things quickly move off the first page. It would be nice to just be able to click "View Unread." Sounds simple enough, right? Adding one simple view to view unread mail, like every other webmail or mail client in existence, would not be hard for them. It seems google is bent on pushing a certain way to read email instead of just adding things. How long did it take them to add a frigging "delete" button?

Simple way to take care of that... use the "archive" feature when you read an e-mail. Instead of clicking "return to Inbox" when you're done reading an e-mail, click on the "Archive" button right next to the "return to Inbox" link. It'll take the e-mail out of your inbox and put it in the e-mail archive, where you can access it by clicking "All Mail" or searching for it if you need to read it again.

Exactly.

Meh, I'm happy with Gmail, and the calendar app they are coming out soon works REALLY well so I'll stick with them.

Oh no, God forbid you have to send something to trash instead! I agree that it took a while, but it's not like it hurt anything.
