Why does everyone say that Newsgroups are so anonymous?

Maximum speed meaning max your connection is capable of?

Would I experience the same port-blocking issues with that as I do with BT on campus?
 
Does anyone still use newsgroups for actually talking about stuff? I remember the good ol' days, before web based forums even existed, spending most of my time on alt.guitar, alt.rock-n-roll.metal, and alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.playboy 🙂
