Newsgroups are cool and you can get almost anything you can think of there. My ISP limits me to 1 gig a month though and that's not even worth messing with. I've paid for newsgroups before and they are better with better retention rates but they are still too expensive.

IRC is best and it's free. :D

verizon has pretty good retention rates

earthlink has a lot of the <ahem> iso groups, but retention is only 4-5 days max, and there is that rolling 5GB/30days limit .but my cable is 6M so it is pretty hot I can grab like 40GB in a day before the rolling limit takes effect :p

maybe i should shut up before too many n00bs get this? but then, if you're a AT fanatic, you probably been online for a longtime and hence you should know about NG... :D

NG = w00t 1337 winnar!

Newsgroups? Okay, to beat a dead horse here just remember the following:

'The First Rule of Newsgroups is...'

Exactly. Most people already have them and they don't even know it. Verzion is the best though!

verizon is the best because it is free, and the retention is like 5-6 days, enough for me to leave it on overnight and get everything.

i wrote a faq on everything about usenet and how to use it, what software to use, and where to look. gave it to all my co-workers.

People upload files anonymously to some newsgroup server that allows it, and then that ng server synchronizes with others that then synchronize with others, until your isp has it. And ok, your ISP may be logging what you download, but it is going to appear like you downloaded hundreds of thousands of posts. The ISP would have to have special logging software that not only logs, but rebuilds posts into binary files on the fly and somehow confirms that you got every post to completion. The much smarter thing for the ISP to do is just block newsgroups where illegal activity is occuring, but since they don't do that, the blame is partially on them. Although, they could claim ignorance on the matter (we arn't paid to police these newsgroups).

im using Newshosting as my newsgroup service and it has like 30 days retention i think. $13 a mo is nothing for all the "service" i get ;)

its a matter of being obscure..like irc or whatever. more obscure, less n00bs, less heat. thats basically it. if it gets popular, the heat comes down and it becomes like kazaa or whatever all over again.

I thought that newsgroups were already settled in court. I thought they sued for illegal activity and the people running the newsgroups won the case. So I though that it was already done with.

The providers have legal precedence that says they don't have to log which user downloads what because they aren't responsible for the content. Sure, they still have your name, address, phone number, credit card, but they have a don't-ask-don't-tell policy in place regarding what actually goes on. That is, until a newer court (this ruling is circa 1992) decides that they ARE responsible, which would be brought on by a massive popularity rush caused by people NOT OBEYING THE FIRST RULE.

The stuff I've seen on newsgroups leads me to believe it's pretty damn anonymous.

Your pretty nasty.

You're pretty irritating, as far as noobs go.

Your pretty irritating yourself.

My dog could have come up with a better response than that.

Do everyone a favour, and get yourself banned.
