I don't mind film critics, but I seldom agree with them. I watch movies for my own reasons, not somebody else's. To be honest, I wonder why people give so much respect to film critics - if they write something interesting, that's cool, but who really cares what they think?

Who the hell likes Michael Bay?

Someone does. He seem to be one of the most profitable directors and even here, there has been considerable buzz about his last two "summer blockbusters"

I guess we have different definition of "like." Because no one likes his movies. Doesn't mean they won't make money.

If you go and pay money to see all of the man's movies, you like them. He can only fool you so many times before we dub you a fan.

Not necessarily. If the studios pick him to film a franchise that people like, you are more or less "forced" to see "his" movies.

Besides, you've never paid money to see a movie that you were disappointed after?

Plus I don't think most people know who the director is when they go watch a movie.

I care what critics think because it's a good gauge of whether I, too, will like or dislike the movie. It also helps me set expectations going in if I'm hooked into seeing a movie that is likely to be crap.

There's a difference to me between watching a movie where you want to be moved and one where entertained is good enough.

Supertroopers is by no means a "great" movie, but it is pretty darn entertaining 🙂

"Casablanca" entertains through story, acting, cinematography and directing. Haven't seen transformers but it looks like just another special effects vehicle, not much more. I hope high schools have film classes where kids can watch movies like "Casablanca", "high noon", "Flight oh the phoenix" and such. It's saddening to think that today's youth might consider "Harold and Kumar" as some form of art...

Most of our high schools fail at teaching kids math, science, and history...let's try to get that down before we add film studies.

LOL, well I wasn't suggesting bumping math for film study but a little cultural enrichment couldn't hurt...

My HS offered film studies as electives. One of them even counted as half an english class as you would read the books for the movies, then watch the movie, and write a fairly in depth paper comparing what was different and what you liked/disliked about the changes and such.

there are PLENTY of 'bad' movies that entertain the hell out of me and I enjoy watching.

hell i love watching B horror movies.

I think comedy is totally underrated - it's very hard to make people laugh, and we only think of them as dumb because the jokes are often brash or dirty... I mean, look at Knocked Up or 40 Year Old Virign - Dumb on the surface and entertaining, but entertaining because of execution.

My problem is movies like.. Resident Evil 3000, or Transformers.. Or Paul Blart (a comedy that had the smarts of a sitcom)- they don't even try any more, and people still eat them up justifying their mediocrity

Oh, I saw Pearl Harbor, which was the first movie that I recall being promoted as a "Michael Bay" film. After that, I knew enough to not get burned again.

That said, action movies really suck lately, it's not just michael bay. That GI Joe movie looks as horrible as a rollover accident involving a horse trailer.

Then the question stands: Where is the next John Hughes?

This.

Not all movies are supposed to be the next Casablanca. Animal House, in many ways, is as classic as Citizen Kane or Metropolis, but nobody would ever say it's in the same category. When I watch I movie, I don't always wants to be reminded about shitty things going on. I don't always want to be told stories of love that can never be fulfilled or stories about guys dying heroic deaths... sometimes I just want something that will take my mind off things and make me laugh.

Movies like Super Troopers, Eurotrip, or anything but Monty Python are among my favorite movies, but that doesn't mean I make the mistake of thinking their quality pieces of cinematography. They're entertaining. That's it.

Oh, and transformers 1 and 2 both sucked.

It all depends. Sometimes a Grand Slam at Dennys @ 3am tastes as good as a filet from your favorite steakhouse *at that moment*

Sometimes a no-brainer movie like Hangover can be as entertaining as a classic like Braveheart or Saving Private Ryan.

I think the problem is with action movies and CGI - action movies can be smart and still bombastic, without being stupid. Transformers (1, I haven't seen 2) was a screensaver - a cartoon, and didn't bother to even attempt to tell a story, while a movie like say Iron Man was entertaining, had great action, but also told a story. I wouldn't call Iron Man obscure, arty, or pretentious in any way, but it didn't leave me with a migraine.

Exactly. i actually cared about Tony Stark. A good film will leave you invested in the characters, be it action, art, romantic, whatever. Without a story, you have no film. effects are simply a means, they are ancillary (George Lucas actually paraphrased this back in ~82. ...too bad he didn't stick to his own conviction 🙁)

I find it extremely difficult to ever care about any character in any M Bay flick, b/c they are only ever treated as wooden cut-outs; mere vehicles to lead to the next explosion, or over-done car chase. He induces not only headaches, but the worst of our culture, to be honest.

Actually, my biggest complaint about Transformers 2 was that one hour block of flailing attempts at character development in the center of the movie. Featuring characters I already hated from the first film. I'd rather there be nothing then a horrible attempt at something. If I had known the length of the sequence I probably would have taken the opportunity to get my next morning's dump out of the way while it was on.

More importantly reviews for movies don't matter and a movie being entertaining is in the end is the definition of whether it was good or not.

Everything else is a niche classification. Smart, Witty, Well written are all far behind entertaining.

People want reviews to tell them if a movie is entertaining. If the review fails to do this it is worthless to the majority of people. Bad movies classified by expert reviewers coincidentally are also boring, but a good review does not imply that the movie was entertaining... at least not for everyone.

I think its good people aern't allowing others especially those they don't agree with define what is a good movie for them. They vote with their wallet and their attention both of which these reviewers are not likely to get.

This is true for any subjective media. Videogame magazines are dropping like flies and before that had to shorten all their reviews because no one took the time to read them. Aggregate score sites are thriving and are a focus of videogame developers because they matter to people. Why? Because they say "The majority people liked this" or "The majority of people did not like this" in about 3 characters.

I didn't know "McG" directed T4 before I saw it.

obviously many people enjoy his movies for what they are otherwise they wouldn't make the money they do.

Bad Boys
The Rock
Armageddon
The Island

you cant tell me you didn't enjoy those movies.

and wtf are you people talking about Casablanca. Obviously Transformers was not made to be a modern day Casablanca.

For those of you bashing his movies......he obviously doesn't care about you losers or what you might think about his movies cause he keeps making them. But don't let that stop your Bay-bashing.

McDonald's sure sells a lot of double cheeseburgers, but they aren't very good.

The Rock was great

I used to read this one Smashing Pumpkins forum, and you'd see people on a regular basis arguing that SP were better than The Beatles.

fanboys are fanboys no matter what medium they apply to

None of the movies on that list were good. The rock was okay, but it wasn't good enough that I'd watch it again.

The man makes awful, awful movies. If you want non-stop action movies, there's nothing wrong with that, but at least watch good ones.

The Rock was great and you know it, very entertaining, I personally think this is because Sean Connery and Nick Cage are both fucking great.

The rest on that list are meh, I wouldnt mind seeing the Island again, but the other ones no thanks
