Plastic bottles can leach a chemical called acetaldehyde into the coke, but chances are you're not going to taste it. Pepsi/Coke establish a maximum AA content that people can actually taste and they don't use any bottles with a higher AA content than that. While you might get an occasional "bad" bottle, you're won't consistently taste a difference because of the AA. Nothing else will leech out into the beverage.

Edit: AA is naturally occurring in fruits and vegetables and has a fruity taste. The taste of the coke would probably overpower it.

Now the carbonation thing might be right. There's a shelf life for Coke based on how much CO2 is left after a time period (again, triangle tests determine when the consumer can actually notice the amount of CO2 lost). Glass containers are a better barrier to CO2 than plastic, so all things being equal (initial charge of CO2, same batch of Coke, etc), Coke in glass may be slightly more carbonated after a month or so.

edit: the bottle I'm drinking from is bottled here, and contains high fructose corn syrup, not sugar.

I call BS. Coke ingredients labels typically say "sucrose and/or high fructose corn syrup."

Unless your label says otherwise, you cannot say for sure you're drinking 'HFCS' coke.

Slightly off topic-- European coke is about a million times better than American. It's made with caramel and sugar cane instead of HFCS. I spent 2 months drinking the coke over there and now I can't even bring myself to drink an American coke. :)

I saw that Costco is carrying Mexican Coke in bottles (with cane sugar.) Pretty expensive, but much cheaper than a flight to Mexico. :p

They put more CO2 into plastic bottles then cans because of the loss and because plastic bottles are intended to be open and closed many times. So you are drinking over carbonated coke when drinking out of the plastic bottle.

All we have here is glass bottles, no cans allowed. You can get every soda in glass bottles

why not?

Environmental policy. All of the above can be recycled, but it takes less energy to reuse glass.

no idea, but it does and nearly every pub i go to sells it in the glass bottle

it stays cooler longer as well, means i dont need ice which will water it down

for me it goes

coke in a glass bottle
from the can
from a plastic bottle
from a mixer pump like they have in McD's.... its almost always mixed wrong.

Soda in Jordan? Sugar
Soda in Dubai? Sugar
Soda in the US? FUCKING HFCS ARGH ARGH ARGH

My foreign relatives simply did not understand what the fuck I was talking about when I told them they sweetened sodas in the US with corn syrup. can't even begin to describe the looks on their faces.

With the Ethanol craze, you think there is any chance HFCS will be dropped? Wait, I am talking about the Corn lobby giving up cash cow...

just like why beer tastes better in a bottle, and even better poured into a glass. If you can distinguish the taste, you really can taste the can or even the glass bottle. If I have a beer I've never tried before, I have to pour into a fresh glass. The taste of the bottle is too intrusive for me.

Aluminum is better for chilling, of course...but glass is best for taste

It's actually the glass. I also enjoy Pepsi from the can better than from plastic bottles and paper cups. I rank it like this:

Pepsi in can
Pepsi in paper cup
Pepsi in plastic bottle

i agree the pepsi from teh can is better then bottle.

for me its

glass
can
plastic bottle.

just wish they would carry the glass around here. i have seen 7oz of coke but never pepsi.

I agree. And why the hell do the stores super overprice the glass bottles... sigh...

manufacturing and shipping glass is more spendy than is aluminum or plastic.

Same reason Beer tastes better and is more expensive in glass bottles over cans of the same quantity.

Its the glass and the sugar.
soft drinks started out with cane sugar and from everyone I ever talked to who was alive at that time , they have said that the cane sugar made a difference.
Even though coke themselves say there is no difference.

Coke cans and most beverage cans are sprayed with a varnish inside the can to protect the aluminum and to keep the coke from getting a metal taste.
I guess sometimes the spray isn't perfect and it changes the taste.
