I doubt many people with the current flash players actually run out of music very often. People use their MP3 collections as just another way to go around comparing e-peens. Look at me, I have 10,000 songs and I listened to 7 of them today! Get over yourselves.

haha that is exactly how i feel
look at me i have 100 GB of music
it would take me a year played straight 24/7 to hear the same song twice
when is enough enough

if a song is not worth me listening to at least 1x a day it is just plain not worth me listening to

if you have not listened to a particular song at least 10 times than it just doesnt belong in your collection otherwise you just wasted your money (obviously if you didn't pay for it than you are just wasting your time acquiring it)

flash ones require a lot less juice, lighter, no moving parts thus are more durable

what more could you want

one with 30+ gigs of storage space

i don't go to the gym for a period of time when I need 30+ gb of music.

i bought my 512mb shuffle for one purpose only - to use at the gym. i typically listen to the same music everytime I am at the gym as well. i just have one of those 2hr non-stop trance/house tracks that i just listen to until i'm done working out. i will change it up like once/month.

so basically it suits my needs perfectly, thats why I got it ...

If I can't fit my entire library on it then a bunch of space is pointless. 4 gigs is perfect for me.

Really? My friend has a Dell DJ, and it skips all the time in his car. Granted, it's an SVT Focus, so it's not the smoothest of rides.

That seems just crazy to me. I don't even have enough time in a day to listen to all of my favorite songs once. Just a few bands could fill an entire day.

"crappy 192"

you DO realize that most people can't tell the difference and/or don't give a shlt about the sound quality between those two, right?

just like most people don't care about HDTV now and only 10% (i think that the number) of all TV's in homes are HD as of now.

people think bigger = better. thats not the case. just get what best suits your needs and get over it.

your needs != other people's needs. why is that so hard to understand?

I take my iRiver h10 5GB when I go jogging, walking, bike riding, or doing whatever outdoors. even took it camping with me :)

have not had it skip yet and I seriously doubt that it will skip anytime in the near future. HDD based MP3 players FTW!!!!

yeah that may be a bit of an exaggeration but

honestly if you have a song in your collection for over a year and havent listened to more than say 10 times or less wouldn't you consider it a waste

obviously if it hasn't gotten 10 plays in the last year than it can't be that great

i'm just saying people just like to rip entire albums when there are probably 5 songs they "like" for the sake of having the whole album

i'm saying don't rip / buy what you aren't going to listen to

usually i'll listent to a whole album 5-6 times before i decide to get rid of stuff but when I don't like a song I get rid of it

if you have 30GB of music + encoded at say 256 Kb/s than i'm saying at least half of that is trash probably 2/3s of it or more is trash

edit:

if you want to go pure lossless than that would be the only reason you would need 30GB+
in a PORTABLE mp3 player since that takes quite a bit of space

because hard drives SUCK! they have very short life spans as it is, I sure as hell wouldn't want to speed up the process by exercising with one when I just spent hundreds of $$ for it. hard drives are ancient technology with short life spans and are the major bottle necks in current systems. once they are able to make flash drives store large amounts of data, hard drives will be extinct.

<--- thinks hard drive technology should have already been phased out like the floppy drives.

Bah, the Creative Zen 40GB players are huge. I couldn't stand carrying around the equivalent of a brick at the gym.

You do anything with a HDD player other than walk around and you will definitely screw it up. Plus, flash drives will be close to the size of HDD players in a year or two.

They are smaller, take less batteries, and are suited for activity.

I don't have one though. Why listen to mp3s when you have NPR and Prairie Home Companion.

I don't even know if my floppy drive still works. it is the oldest component in my computer by far. it's the one thing that doesn't get replaced when I upgrade. I just leave it in the case, along with my zip drive which I haven't used since 2001.

you don't have a usb drive? my university requires us to have them since none of their computers have floppy drives.

Well, I may only have a 128MB flash player for use at the gym, but it's 1/20th of the weight of that brick you're toting. Besides, I'd much rather have spelling and grammar skills than my entire music collection at the gym.

So you're saying you can't understand why your primary consideration when buying an MP3 player isn't shared by everyone. Sorry, I just can't help you with that...

That's basically it (although I'm not interested in MP3 players specifically). However, the cost is still very much an issue - it's why I'm using a $150 5GB microdrive in my camera instead of a 4GB solid state CF that costs $300 or more.
