I tip, all the time, for many things. If the service was bad, they get a bad tip, but %99 I tip people whose job depends on it for a living.

I tip because I used to be a busboy and remember how good some nights were and how bad others were and realizing that I now have that power to affect other peoples lives, I genuinely enjoy leaving a nice tip and being the kind of person that can make a night that much better. Plus, I probably eat out 15% as often as most people, so a large tip isn't as ridiculous as it might be if I was eating out constantly.

because I live in America and we tip here (well if the service is good, and poorly if the service is bad)

I tip because minimum wage for servers does not cover cost of living. In situations where the person is making a proper minimum wage (pizza delivery) I tip because the person (in many cases) used their personal vehicle to deliver me food.

15% is standard for AVERAGE service and in my opinion is not a hard and fast rule. If a person goes the extra mile I've tipped up to 50% on amazing service and quality. I've also left only the change someone that finally took my order more than 10 minutes after sitting down, brought my food out cold and never got me a refill despite having about 1/2 a glass left when the food was delivered.

In Utah waiters and Waitresses make $2.10 an hour, this doesn't even cover their taxes. All of their hourly wage, plus about $100-150 of their tips, is given to uncle sam. That means that their only usable income is off of tips. If you don't tip at waiter in Utah, they aren't making any money. Don't like it get another job? Who the fuck is going to serve your food then?

I agree. If the waiter is a total dick and the service is absolutely horrible, the waiter lost my tip. If he does an average job, 15%. If he does a good job, 20%.

The Golden Rule applies here. I wouldn't be a dick to the customers I'm serving if I'm expecting a nice tip.

Because I'm a paranoid mofo with an overactive imagination on what servers and cooks do to food orders from cheapskates.

I've worked in 3 busy restaurants in my life. Havent seen anyone purposely mess with the food but I do see bad hygiene and preparation. I did want to stab customers where their only reason for coming in was to relieve stress and take it out on the entire food staff. <-- There are a lot of people like this which is why I quit at those jobs.

I like tipping because I like quality. Not only do I want to express that I appreciate quality, but establishing a relationship as a regular who tips well very often means that you end up getting top notch or even special treatment. It's a win/win situation if you play your cards properly.

I tip for good service and I tip poorly for terrible service. Chances are I'll also never come back to that restaurant again.

You get taxed on your taxable income. So if the person makes 2.10 an hour they cant be taxed more than that. Unless Utah has some crazy "everyone pays $10,000 in taxes" rule then your statement does not make sense.

Tips are taxable income. You have to declare your tips at the end of your shift. Having worked in a few restaurants in Utah, I have noticed that most people are pretty honest about it. If they get a night were they get a bunch of cash tips, they usually declare a much lower amount than they actually got, but most of the time they declare all of their tips.

To pay for taxes a waiter has to A) write the company a check when they pick up their paycheck. Or B) give half of the tips back, and they collect whatever is left after taxes on their paycheck.

Here in Cali, servers make the state minimum wage so it's not like I feel bad for them making little money.

I think the real question is, why don't certain ethnic groups tip?

Edit - reworded my question.

These things have only 1 valid opinion. Women have a right to an abortion, no mater what their age is. A 10 year girl should be able to abort the parasite in her body without any parental consent. Gay marriage is a natural right, and for states to infrindge on it is a violation of the natural right of these people.

lol you're going to do really well in college. You should major in sociology, the professors there will love your "intelligence" (and ITB too).

I think everyone should be a waiter at least once in their life, if only to see what they have to deal with.

Because it's expected. Restaurants pay them like $2/hr assuming that they make a reasonable wage from tips.

For jobs where the employee earns a reasonable hourly wage, I feel no obligation to tip, and rarely do.

If you knew they were making close to $9 an hour would you still tip?
To be honest, probably not, or at least not very much.

CA waiters make $8 minimum wage. You now can only tip $1.

The only people I always tip are my tattoo artist and strippers.

Everyone else either really deserves the extra money and gets tipped, or gets nothing but their fucking paycheck.

If you don't like tipping, just think of the level of service you get at your local Best Buy or WalMart. That's what you'll get in restaurants if you abolish tipping. NO THANKS!

I wouldn't want it any other way.

Only works because you're white. Asians and blacks tend to get bad service because of the stereotype, hence they tip less, get the reputation, vicious cycle.

$2/hr waiters DO NOT report all of their income. A lot of the time cash tips are kept off the books.

Your math doesn't work out, bub.

As far as paying taxes, everyone pays them. Who gives a damn if they pay their fair share from tips or their check?

When I was a waiter, my check was for exactly that - covering the taxes on my tips. And I'd be shocked if more than 1% of waiters reports their tips completely honestly.

Servers don't intentionally draw that happy face on your bill for nothing. They want a bloody tip and a big one at that!
