For jobs where the employee earns a reasonable hourly wage, I feel no obligation to tip, and rarely do.

If you knew they were making close to $9 an hour would you still tip?

Hey, our girl was nice.
She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
What's special? Take you in the back and suck your ****?
I'd go over twelve percent for that.

I tip because it is a hard job to be a waitress/waiter. I appericate the fact that if they are doing a good job, they deserve to be rewarded by a generous tip.

I think everyone should be a waiter at least once in their life, if only to see what they have to deal with.

I've worked at customer service places that do 20x the work that waitresses do but I never got a tip. Well that and we would get fired if we accepted tips. Why give some people tips and not others?

What I hate most about the American system is ... your server is your server. God forbid I ask a waiter walking by to get me something. They need to pool tips and just let us ask a waiter for something instead of waiting for 1 person to re-emerge from the back. God that's annoying. And the g'damn employers need to pay people for doing their job... having customers reward more / less because they're doing their job is stupid.

I tip because I have to.

partly because it's expected, partly because it pays to have the restaurant staff like you if you go to the same restaurants on a regular basis.

So... 20%? Calling him cheap?

I was confused by that comment as well. Maybe he was just reporting he's not a cheapskate?

I actually like tipping. I see it as my chance to tell the server how well they did their job. I've also been a waiter.

I tip well when I get good service, when the service is bad I don't. This one time at Chili's our service was so bad, the manager spoke with us, got a free appetizer, which they then tried to charge us for. At the end I paid with my card, and wrote -$X.XX in the tip column, and subtracted from the total. I never checked my statement for that particular item to see what it did, but it was pretty funny.

I'd tip less but I'd still tip. I couldn't live on $9 an hour and as long as they seem like they're working hard I think they deserve to make a living too.

I tip because it's worked into their pay structure. A waiter or waitress can't make a living off their base pay. They rely on tips to pay their rent. Whether you agree or disagree with the system that's how it is. I don't mind it too much, it lets me reward good service and punish bad service. You do well, you'll get 15% or more. Normal service is 10% and crappy service will get 5% or less.

Just think, if people are given tips based on merit and still give the terrible service that they do just think how their service would be if they made the same amount without regard to how well the did their jobs.

This is a situation where I said that David Hasselhoff came in. This is a discussion about tipping. I told you what he tipped. I made no comment about the amount. You read into it. Where did I ever call anyone cheap?

The post under yours thought I was saying that he WASN'T a cheapskate. Two totally different interpretations about the same 2 lines.

From those two reactions I can probably guess that one person thinks that 20% is a good tip and the other thinks that 20% is far too much. First dude probably never even worked in a restaurant.

To be honest, probably not, or at least not very much.

Waitresses make a hell-uv-a-lot. If they aren't making enough money, hell they can get another job. They stay because they make good money. Also how much of that is even reported to the IRS over the base 8%.......

I don't tip, because I live in a country where you don't have to tip nor is it expected.

No, marriage is a natural right. Gay or straight has nothing to do with it. Gay people do not deserve any extra "rights" over anyone else.

I tip because tipping is the single best system for ensuring personalized service.

*I* get to reward good service, and punish bad service. I LIKE that the majority of the service person's pay comes from me, and that he/she has a vested interest in making me happy, not just his/her boss.

If you don't like tipping, just think of the level of service you get at your local Best Buy or WalMart. That's what you'll get in restaurants if you abolish tipping. NO THANKS!

I wouldn't want it any other way.
