Why do you post?

I was wondering this the other day, I'm on a handful of forums I've frequented for 5+ years, and my combined post total is probably around 3,000. Other people get that total in a year or less, and I wondered, what compels some people to post?

I tend to only post when I want to help someone, need help myself, if something is particularly impressive and I wanna "rep" the post(er), or if someone says something so stupid that I find a near moral obligation to try to halt the propagation of pure stupidity.

Many people seem to be the ones who try to post something funny or witty, and that seems to be their compulsion. Others just "talk," others flame, others troll, but it seems like people have something that makes the "tick."

What's yours?

I used to be the same, I don't post unless someone had a question or needed help on something.
I had like 500 posts at the start of this year, now I've doubled that amount.

Think its because I decided the forums needed more people talking; do your part if you want something to read. Otherwise it's slow and a drag to sit around with no one ever replying.

I like the mix of young confused folks and old crochety ones. I post because I really like variety.

On an IP (intellectual property) forum I frequent, my post total reached well over 1000 in about 6 months. I post there because it is a way for me to stay sharp on all things IP law related.

Here, I post for fun. Mainly because people raise interesting topics or are interested in stuff that no one I know in real life is interested in (computer hardware in particular).

Speaking of IP law, we still need to have our patent law discussion. My wife is out of town tonight and I am on kid duty. My son goes down at 7:30PM sharp, so I will be available to chat after that time if you are. Let me know by PM. I'll check in on the forum at ~7:45PM. If you haven't sent me a PM, I'll assume you are not available.

Generally because I am bored at work, or need a brief distraction from work.

I'm at work and this is one of the few domains that's both not blocked and mildly interesting. It makes the day go faster to be engaged in "conversation" about things I find appealing; technology and computers and other crap that goes along with that.

it is the closest thing to real life proof of my existence, being that I am merely a pseudo-sentient awareness.

Because I like the social atmosphere here. My social anxiety isn't so bad that I have any problems talking to people out in the real world but the reality is I just don't get out that much, my primary interests being nerdy/geeky stuff keeps me indoors most of the time. Even when I worked I would spend most of my time on the computer when I got home, again see my interests. So it's nice to talk online in a community of people, just to get that back and worth conversation that everyone needs. And believe it or not I like the people here, certainly there are some ass holes here like there are anywhere else in life but there are some genuinely nice people here and I like to think I've made a few friends as well. :)

It's also fun to spar intellectually when some actual serious topic comes up once in a while.

Something to do while at work, or at home if its shitty outside.

I've just been a member here so long... Would seem weird not to (I did go through a time where I didn't log on to AT for a year or so) My life was just entirely different during that time.
