Ah, so IOW, you walk. Smart man! There's not even milk and bread within a 20-minute one-way walk where I live. Closest "bar" isn't even worth mentioning...and it would be a 30-minute walk home...on a dark road. I'd be roadkill.

I pretty much stopped going to clubs b/c I will not drive if I have a single sip of alcohol; it's just not worth getting caught. Average DWI/DUI will cost you upwards of $10K in fees/penalties. I will go out if I have a guaranteed SOBER driver. That ain't me though!

Has "DWI Education" or fear curtailled your social life/habits?

I taxi. To be more specific, I generally ride the bus TO the bar, and then take a taxi home. It's about a $22-$25 cab ride from my favorite bar. I just chalk it up to the cost of doing business. A DUI for me would mean I lose my job, so cab fare is cheap in the grand scheme of things.

:thumbsup: You and I are reading the exact same page from the exact same book. It is indeed a "cost of doing business" but money is tight for me. Married with children is really different than single. :\

When and if I do go out, if I'm drinking then I have a plan. Corny but true: If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.

True story: Last year my buddies car (he was the DD and sober) got stopped at a DUI checkpoint. I was in the passenger seat. When they put the light in my face I just slobbered all over the cop and said "HOWDY OCCIFFFEERRR!! I'm bombed, but my chauffer is sober as a churchmouse....really...he's like ....sober and stuff....you should let me calibrate your DUI sniffer...I would break it...." The cop laughed and waved us through. 😀
 
My favorite is the Crescent Moon. Regular divey bar upstairs, German bar downstairs. Of course, the German bar is fully stocked with tons of Doppel and Optimator...and the boots.

Also, to answer MikeD, I typically drive to the bar, but then leave my car there until the morning. I usually hitch a ride with a DD or a cab.
 
The 3 near where I am suck, the one I like is a 30 min drive away..not really worth it sadly. Can't wait to move out of this shithole and find civilization again.
 
There's two regular places I visit.

Hometown sportsbar type place: Nice clean, everyone welcome, decent food, cheap taps. The kinda place you hang out after work. Was no smoking before the smoking ban and it isn't ridiculously "bar dark".

Hometown irish brewpub: Know the owner. Know the owner's son. Know every staff member. They brew their own. Live music every weekend (even if the band isn't very good). Not overly packed with people every night.

I don't like bars where I can't find a seat, crammed in elbows to asses to drink a $3 shitweizer tap. I don't like yuppie bars where I feel out of place because I have long hair. I don't like divebars where everyone has long hair but I don't ride a harley or work on shit cars so I'm not really welcome.

I have my territory and I generally stick to it.
 
My favourite bar is called Zigfrid Von Underbelly. I like it because it's really quirky, different and serves all my favourite drinks at good prices in my favourite part of London. Also, the music isn't to intrusive and they are always showing one of my favourite films. Last time I was there they had Ghostbusters on one projector and Back to the future on the other! 😀

My favourite pub however I like because it's comfortable, close, cheap, good warm ale, warm but not hot, quiet music, looks nice and does really good food.

This thread is depressing that everyone gets cheap drinks - I miss beer & cocktail specials.

Bars we frequent is owned by the same owner and we like some of the bartenders so we will follow them o whichever bar they work at.

No happy hour, no food, no specials.

Domestic bottles $3.50, all others $4.50. Decent selection of quality beer, lots of micros and imports.

Mixed drinks start at $5. Patron is $9.50 for reference and JD is $7. Stiff pours though with no gun or measuring device in sight.

jukebox, pool table, darts and a local blue collar crowd after work. Nice place to park you ass on a stool for a few hours and converse with the crowd while sipping on a drink.
 
My favorite bar was my favorite bar because it had free pool, strong drinks and was around the corner from where I lived. After I started frequenting the place regularly, I got to know everyone there, both in terms of bar staff and patrons. It had a very Cheers-y feeling to it; everyone would greet you when you came in.

Now I've moved out of the neighborhood (as have most of my friends who I made there), I have my own pool table which plays significantly better than any of the bar tables, and I can't drink because of medical reasons. So I'm thinking my bar days are all behind me.
