Can you suggest a good red wine for a normal non-red-wine-drinkner? I would like it to be more fruity than dry and not too much $$...
I am cluess about red wine!

Over time dry wine will grow on you, but if you just want something to drink, take some red wine, mix in alot of fruits & make sangria. Or just buy some white zinfandel(pinkish hue). Ice wine is sweet, but it's white & expensive. Labrusco or Canai works alright too I guess.

I have made sangria with a reisling and it was great, but i really want to enjoy and drink more red wine. We LOVE ice wine but it is really pricy. Zin is alright, i guess i need to educate myself on wine more so i can really decide what i like. It seems good wine only = red wine.

It's more of a social thing, I don't generally drink to get hammered. I do however, seem to have a like towards good beers. So far I've tried....

Natural Ice - Disgusting
Bud Light - Too sour
Bud Select - Stronger Taste
Newcastle - Not bad, kind of taste like cramel
India Pale Ale - Very hoppy, though I'd like to try it with some food
Killians Red - Awesome, copper after taste

So, anyone have any suggestions on what to get next?

Not at all. It's just that red wine has a longer shelf life, so there is more of it made. I usually don't drink unless there is food in front of me. Pairing is always what I look for. People always say to drink white with fish, chicken, pasta, etc., but red works too if it suits your tastes.

Chards are fruity, yet very dry, & sometimes a bit acidy. A soave is basically a milder version of that. A mild syrah(shiraz) goes good with most anything. My favorite red wine is a spicy red zinfandel. Goes well with steak. 🙂

You and I have kind of opposite tastes, it seems, since I don't like the sweet stuff as much. 🙂

Syrah (also known as Shiraz) is supposed to be a fruity, jam-y tasting wine, but it is also pretty dry. Most beginning red wine drinkers tend to like Merlot, which I am not especially into. Do you want a particular recommendation within a certain price range?

weekdays i drink beer because it tastes great... just as i do tea or coffee or fresh-squeezed oj
80% taste - 20% relaxant

some weekends i buy liquor or cheap beer downtown because, frankly, getting drunk...losing inhibition.. acting stupid.. is fun

Why? I like to firm up my liver.

kidding...
I got drunk once and decided never again. I'll have single drink every now and then.

I suggest a fine white wine ... like Mad Dog 20-20.

Drink a bottle of that, and all of a sudden you're seeing vapour trails. 😀

For all you wine drinkers.

Seriously look into box wines. You can now get pretty decent wine in a box. We get one that is 24 bucks - for 3L.

That's 4 bottles of pretty decent wine (as good as a 10-15 dollar bottle) for 24 bucks.

With the oversupply of wine a lot of producers are taking their overages and selling them for cheap. Boxing Roo is actually Owen's Estate Reserve - but 1/3 of the price.

Its hard to take boxed wine Serious

for cheap cheap cheap party wines, carlo rossi jugs of sangria is pretty good... throw some chopped fruits in a big punch bowl and girls gulp it down

I stopped drinking several months ago, it just didn't appeal to me anymore, I don't even miss it which is wierd in a way because I've drank plenty in my time. I'll still knock a few down with the boys every once in a while but those times are very few and far between.

Things are changing. I know it sounds unusual, but there are actually good wines in a box now comparable to the 10-15 and higher bottle categories. The producers love them - cheap packaging.

Read up on Wine Enthusiast magazine.

Try a Kendall Jackson red, maybe a pinot noir. I think they have a very good cabernet sauvignon. You can generally find KJ wines in the grocery store.
