I am not but really Microsoft is doing a heck of a job making computers less evil to those who don't know how to use one. :)

Is what I heard about them referencing registrations to IP's so you have to buy a copy for each of your own computers, and call them for a new code if you re-format ?

surely the registration wouldn't have anything to do with IP addresses, the vast majority of internet users have a different IP address every time they connect to the net

I guess so. And since it is really 2000 anyway, I shall stick to what I have.

I don't like the software-as-service theory of Microsoft's .NET

Therefore I do not like XP, the heart of .NET's software-as-service theory.

Mayhem1869: So then system builders like me who use one copy of a OS CD will have to call MS everytime we build a computer?

I'm sure that is what it is aimed at, but d@mn it will be a pain in the @ss for the people that just want to re-format their hard drive. I'm sure that M$ is really hurting from all of the people stealing from them.(thick
sarcasm)

Ummm... at the risk of sounding like an idiot, what's Windows XP? I mean by, is it a completely new type of OS, or is it supposed to be based on NT or something? I haven't really heard about XP. Seen some pics of it, but that's about it.

<< Therefore I do not like XP, the heart of .NET's software-as-service theory. >>

XP is more like the spleen of the software-as-service concept. Blackcomb will be the heart... .NET 2.0 or something like that. Anyway the idea is way too far ahead of its time. I could maybe see it work if we had Internet 2 (100 mbps+) available and for cheap. But not in today's environment. Especially when M$ doesn't really know just what .net is yet...everytime I read about it all i hear is generalizations.

Facts:

Windows 2000 is .......NT 5.0
Windows XP will be ....NT 5.1
Blackcomb will be .....NT 6.0

While M$ makes money it wants to profit off all those people who never upgrade from Windows 95. There thinking is that they can making money off the software even if you don't upgrade. From a business view it's a good one, from a consumer view it's payment without end.

Windows XP will have new features:

1. Zip program built in but not as good as programs that already exist.
2. Firewall but not as good as ZoneAlarm
3. Burner software but not as good as nero or ez cd.
4. allows the UI to be skinned...windowsblinds does the same thing.
5. allow to run servers without the need for a monitor.
6. remote desktop..this one scares me!
7. better suport for two monitors
8. finally games on the NT platform
9. NT the only platform to support for software makers.
10. two cpu support for Windows XP PRO ( 2000 already has this)

and the crap we don't need:

1. Activation
2. Subscription
3. new UI (that most power users will turn off)

PS: I do like the new Icons!

<< what's wrong with remote desktop? >>

It would allow somone else in a network or on the internet to control your computer from far away.

What is it with this "I hate the UI" thing? I know a good number of you are running Linux with some iteration of KDE or Gnome or Xfree and whenever you take screenshots of your desktop we all see the fancy shmancy skins you guys load. Granted, this Luna crap is no Aqua and it would've been nice to see some sort of 3d acceleration implemented into the UI, but at least its customizable and built-in and by the time XP's released it should be pretty transparent performance-wise.

Yes, DiRF, Windows 2000 booting is pretty slow, but you rarely have to do it.
Win Me (being 9x) has to be rebooted more often than 2000 (barring certain reinstalls and hardware changes, of course).

Last time I rebooted my 2K was last Monday when I put in some RAM. And when I do boot it up, I just go get a cup of coffee... It only takes about 2 mins. :)

<< 1. Zip program built in but not as good as programs that already exist.
Don't need this, I'll use Winzip thank you
2. Firewall but not as good as ZoneAlarm
I'll take @Guard. Superior firewall, plus never look at a banner advertisement again
3. Burner software but not as good as nero or ez cd.
You can't get better than Nero, why include this
4. allows the UI to be skinned...windowsblinds does the same thing.
Windowblinds, Litestep, and number of other programs for useless resource hogging eyecandy
5. allow to run servers without the need for a monitor.
I've run NT servers without a monitor since NT 3.5, whats the big deal?
6. remote desktop..this one scares me!
VNC anyone?
7. better suport for two monitors
Whats wrong with NT 5's dual monitor support? I've been using it for a year
8. finally games on the NT platform
What? I play tons of games on NT 5
9. NT the only platform to support for software makers.
10. two cpu support for Windows XP PRO ( 2000 already has this)
Like you said.. 2k already has this
>>

Loooks to me like XP offers me NOTHING.

Thanks but no thanks. And all that frilly homo eyecandy junk seals the deal.. I'll stick with Windows 2000
