Facts:

Windows 2000 is .......NT 5.0
Windows XP will be ....NT 5.1
Blackcomb will be .....NT 6.0

While M$ makes money it wants to profit off all those people who never upgrade from Windows 95. There thinking is that they can making money off the software even if you don't upgrade. From a business view it's a good one, from a consumer view it's payment without end.

Facts revised a little:

Windows XP will finally be the convergence of the separate product lines (nt & 9x). XP will be available in 3 flavors - home, pro, and advanced server. Pro will be for most power users, home is obvious, and server for all the corporate servers..

I have run home and pro, personally I like the interface, except its gonna be he11 for tech support.. Specially considering it doesn't place a my computer icon on the desktop.. and mosttech agents know how much you use this.. its located in the start menu on XP.. however, if you turn off the fluff, does anyone know if it shows the my puter icon on the desktop then???

Umm, as for blackcomb, it is not a new version of windows. If you check out microsofts research and development site, you will find it is only a graphical interface, and not a new version of windows... blackcomb might be used in a new version in the future, but it will probably be just windows xp with a new look..

anyways, enough from me...

edit: PS: you know, I did like the new icons and the new look for the UI though.. And the way the my computer window is shown all organized like it is will help a lot of the people i do support for.. heh

XP looks just too bloated for me and just knowing that the fluff is there.. *shudder*

I do agree with Imaginer, Windows does make a system user friendly for those who are new to it all. However, do they have to put shortcuts all over the place???? One in the toolbar, one on the desktop, one under the start menu in various folders...yikes! :Q

gaming performance declines in win2k

That's only because of immature drivers. Nvidia and ATI will get better drivers in time, but Nvidia's are pretty fast right now.

From what I've heard:

You buy the software then pay a yearly fee to use it.

Kinda like buying a book and having to pay every time you read it.

I am running WinME simply because win2k dosent support all the games that are out there. I play too many games to have win2k not like my favorites (ie. Rollercoaster Tycoon, NHL2k1) and dont tell how there are workarounds, if they dont work properly, i dont want to have to spend an hour getting it to work. Im looking forward to XP, simply for this fact. If i have to pay? big deal. you buy it at a reduced cost and pay a bit over the year... thats fine by me.

And what happens a year from now when M$ decides its time to quit offering subscriptions to that os that you liked more than their current lineup (Similar to how many choose 98 over ME) so they can make some extra money charging you for a new OS? Sure you may like the older one better but if they don't want to let you use it they don't have to! No thanks

Can MS really include all that stuff? Didn't they learn trying to bundle IE and Windows together?

Now they're ripping off netscape, nero, windowblinds, winzip, pcanywhere, and firewall makers.

After all why would someone buy the third party stuff if it's already included in the OS? It worked for IE. I can't believe they're trying to get away with this, but I know that they will. I guess they want every single piece of software to be written by them...no competition in anything. How dismal.

I haven't seen anyone mention the fact that you have to call Microsoft for any hardware additions to the system. If you swap video cards, sound cards, NIC's, etc. (like I do) then you will be calling Microsoft every week to let them know you have upgraded your system.

They are also trying to fight music piracy by including a mp3 scanner. Mp3's have to be "authorized" first before downloading and listening.

Microsoft is out to gouge the customer for every d4mn penny and they are only marketing and creating merde (French).

Yes but it will be NT 6.0 and it will have more features added..it's still in alpha build so who knows what they will add, it's two years away so I'm sure there still brainstorming. I heard they are betting the farm on it so if it doesn't sell well it will really hurt M$.
