WHy is this still going on. I'd be amazed anyone changed their preconceived notion after getting into this pointless argument

The mods feel this ignorant pile of BS is unfit to be locked, its been discussed in FI.

i think its a little silly for either to criticize the other.

what you believe is more a product of whose crotch you were yanked from than conclusions you think you draw on yourself. Had you been born a poor african in zimbabwe or prince in India, your faith would not hold any resemblances to what it is now. Our faith (or lack of) is as much of our environment as anything else.

It was a clear black night, a clear white moon
Warren g was on the streets, trying to consume
Some skirts for the eve, so I can get some funk
Just rollin in my ride, chillin all alone

One thing I hate is when someone in my family says "Thank god for this or that" when I bring in good grades or I do something good. I think to myself, um god didn't do that thing. I busted my @ss to get the grades and I did that thing, not god. Why thank him?

On a mission trying to find Mr. Warren G.
Seen a car full of girls ain't no need to tweak

Easy. A spiritual being gives people hope and faith. It makes them believe. I got everything I asked for when I prayed.

I'll tell you this. In my life time I was suppose to die 3 times. Once at birth when the doctors said my mother could never give birth to a child again. Another was a car accident when I went head onto a SUV at 45 MPH and both me and the other victums got out un harmed. And most importantly, I'm also a survivor of cancer, and there is not one cancer cell left in my bone marrow. Coincidental? Maybe. But I like to believe that someone is trying to keep me a live up there.

My faith goes stronger everyday. One time I even prayed to god to help me find a girl for me so I wouldn't have to suffer the depression of being alone. And soon after - I meet a girl who is from the same town as me, beautiful as can be, and is earning her masters degree at a top NJ school.

By all means, I hate the catholic church, but I love the faith. All my life it seems I had a guardian angel by my side. And I will never let my faith go.

perhaps. but its better to believe you are simply lucky. think of what your belief means for the "unlucky".

god i hate michaeld
for some reason seeing that picture of hus ugly ass by his grill only made me hate his drama queen, whining ass.

if he wasnt too fat, bald, old and weak in the knees to go to Iraq right now, somehow I dont think he would be thumbing his nose at soldiers and civilians alike praying when bullets whizz by their heads.

and I am not religious.

the attitude displayed by the OP is the kind of one i had....when I was about 12.

The whole "religion is for the weak/sheep" i am so much smarter/enlighterned/better then you thing really gets old. Plus the fact that when most people say religion, they automatically assume catholicathism.

But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes,
knowing that they generate strife.

next time you want to argue with people about this subject, try using a source that they dont immediately denounce. Try something like this as a jumping point of an argument, because bible quotes are useless when you dont believe in the bible.

"We think having faith means being convinced God exists in the same way we are convinced a chair exists. People who cannot be completely convinced of God?s existence think faith is impossible for them. Not so. People who doubt can have great faith because faith is something you do, not something you think. In fact, the greater your doubt the more heroic your faith."
Real Live Preacher

Perhaps a better argument could be made that there is no risk in believing, unless believing in the wrong one is a possibility. But, the consequences for NOT believing could have eternal reprocussions.

Just a couple of suggestions, i've heard em all though. I still grapple with my faith. Its ok to admit that you may not be able to know beyond a reasonable doubt.

@guev - dont confuse catholicism with christianity. they are not one in the same.

but isn't that essentially pascals wager? you'd hve to add the risk of believing insincerely for a self serving reason to that one. and of course the basic logic that an all good god would not be so full of himself that he would punish good people for not worshipping him.

I think it is. Its an idea i was introduced to a while back, but i couldnt seem to find it here on the net. I just couldnt remember where i heard that notion.

Later.

But since your such an asshole, you just HAD to make it insulting to all those who believe there IS a God.

There are much better ways to ask a question, get an opinion or post an observation.

No...I don't believe one second that your post was innocent. It was degrading and offensive.

You must really be friends with a mod for this thread to stay alive.

Less degrading threads have been locked as soon as a mod came on.

yes, it is. i found it now that i could google the correct name.

Pascal's Wager can be presented in many different forms, usually something like this:
"If you believe, and God exists, you gain everything. If you disbelieve, and God exists, you lose everything."

Alternatively :
"It makes more sense to believe in God than to not believe. If you believe, and God exists, you will be rewarded in the afterlife. If you do not believe, and He exists, you will be punished for your disbelief. If He does not exist, you have lost nothing either way. "

<< Religion was created to explain the unexplainable in a time where there was little scientific knowledge. >>

Ha ha, that's a good one. All religions share some qualities, one of them being the absolutele knowledge, not belief, mind you, that it, and it alone is the only correct explanatory model for life and existence. That's how you can always spot a religion. And that's how you can, if you have any ability to reason at all, see that science is also a religion. Since it has this absolute faith in its own powers, it has its high priests, it has its sacred texts, it has things that layman cannot possibly grasp. And it has power. Personally, I see science as one of the less interesting religions I've come across, not nearly as powerful a system as some I've studied. And not nearly as good an explanatory model either. But that won't stop all the rabidly faithful science true believers, never has, never will.

Verry Important!!! You can say what you want to say about GOD, but the fact is that without Religion our more importantly Christianity, the world would not be as it is today. Because of GOD Imaginary or not he still has effect on some people, changing them from bad to good. If you realise it is easy for people to not belive in GOD and beleive in Demons.

Religion changes few from bad to god. Religion kills and killing is bad.

I would look for a different guardian angel if I were you. Yours gave you cancer, endangered your life at birth, and decided that you should get in a car accident.

by the same logic above, did the same spiritual being just indescriminately kill 160,000 people and destroy many more's homes?

was the same spirit watching over the 20 million russian civilians killed in WW2? over the 250k American soldiers? over the 1million americans in the civil war etc etc? is it the same that allows Africa to be a cesspool of AIDS, rape, murder, starvation, and absolute poverty? Did they ALL need to be damned?

man posts like these always get out of hand...shows how passionate people are when talking about religion and spirituality.

btw brad, a spiritual being did not just kill 160,000 people, a tsunami did.

MySoS, I have to disagree with you that religion changes few from bad to good. The core of most religions teach peace and NOT to kill people. It's just a shame that the 99 percent of the news show murders and negative things so we get the perception that God doesn't exist/religion is bad. I don't deny that people have killed in the name of religion but I believe that if you compare the amount of lives it has changed or other beneficial things vs. the amount of lives religion has destroyed/murdered, it will be like infinity to one.

Read the bible, Koran, tora, etc. The core of these and all other religion teach intolerance. Even the ones who don't teach intolerance eventually go that way. Millions have died in the name of religion each century. All of the so called good of religion could have been done with out it, and often it times it would have been better. Enough is enough it is time that religion is purged from the world. It is high time we banned religion teaching to children. For it is with children first that we can purge these faiths from the world.

and how realistic do u think religion will be purged from our societies? religion has been with humans since the very beginning, what makes u think it will stop? I respect your opinion but it's not going to happen whether you or I like it or not.

Also, I think you are making a big leap to say that the so called good of religion could have been done without it. True religion teaches intolerance to an extent but most if not all don't say kill that person -- just some fanatics interpret it that way which is sad. It is my opinion that religion and it's people has done a heck of a lot of good things and is a good influence in our centuries rather than evil.

?Why do weak people always turn to God?

Only the weak who are wise turn to God. God is where strength resides and is freely given.

There are other things that are not necessarily bad for you but they are bad if used to attempt to gain strength. The weak who are not wise turn to many other things for strength, some of which I will list here:

Islam, environmentalism, liberalism, drugs, intellectualism, pride in rejecting God, pursuit of goods, sex, money, politics, power, Democrat party, abortion, etc.

There is nothing more silly and tragic that a person who puffs himself up believing he is self sufficient.

One day soon, this person will bend his knee and say with his mouth that Jesus is Lord.

🙂
