Why do we put lettuce on sandwiches?

its there to give the false impression of healthy balance..lettuce..doesn't have much nutrition, let alone a single leaf.
 
I like uncooked spinach on both sandwiches and hamburgers it adds some flavor and actually has nutritional value unlike iceberg lettuce I'm sure most of you are talking about. lettuce does provide some flavor, texture and temperature difference if done correctly.

Maybe some fiber too? I don't know off hand how much if any is there...
 
It adds fiber so you can shit. If you are eating Subway, you need to get it out of your system as quickly as you can.
 
I don't eat lettuce unless it comes on something I order. I've never been at a grocery store and said man I'm running low on lettuce what will I ever do.

- Tomatoes
- Shredded Lettuce
- Pickles

I think good, fresh lettuce tastes nice on a sammich. Also, its greens, which you need anyway. And salad is ick. May as well be on something nice, like a sammich.
 
Green leafy lettuce is what makes the sandwich great. People have commented at work on how appetizing my sandwiches are based on the large green lettuce leaf on top.

Green leafy lettuce provides fiber, iron, and water. My preference is Boston Lettuce with Romaine lettuce coming in second. The iron is useful to carry the oxygen through the blood for energy. If I do not eat enough lettuce, I can feel the difference with decreased energy.

Rye bread (naturally shaped, not from a pan), a little mayo, meat from a Polish or German deli, swiss cheese, tomato, onion, and green leafy lettuce. This kind of sandwich makes a nutritious meal.

Really? You iron intake is so on the razor's edge that a few leafs of lettuce makes the difference between having enough and not?

😀 I know the quality and types of meat from a Polish or German deli. There is a Russian sandwich shop in downtown Chicago with fantastic meat. I do not trust American lunchmeat. The styles, tastes, and added ingredients are different depending on the type of provider.

Yes, always has been. When younger and then with each year's physical/blood test while in the navy, I was constanty told that I was anemic. They did not say anything more and I did not understand more about it.

Then I got married and my spouse ate these sandwiches. After several years of eating these sandwiches with the green leafy lettuce, I need at least one sandwich a day for either breakfast or lunch. A bowl of cereal or a banana does not provide for me anymore like a sandwich does.

Plus, I just passed 40 this year and have found a stronger desire for eating vegetables than I have ever known before. I think my body needs the vitamins.

EDIT:
Maybe it is also relevant that I have always been skinny and possibly undernourished. I weighed 155-160 lbs. in high school at 6' tall with a 31-32 inch waist. This gradually increased to 165-175 lbs. by 25 years old. I am now at 175 lbs at 40 yrs old with a 33-34 inch waist.
