Why do we need these programs ...

We don't need any of these programs. There is no reason to believe that individuals in need would not be taken care of by private contributions (i.e., real charity) if the government stopped funding such programs.

In theory they are great programs. In practice they were poorly implemented and are way to easy to abuse.
If you loose your job out of the blue one day you'll be glad these programs exist. The problem is that it is possible for people to spend their entire lives living off of these programs.
Precisely.

From experience, getting a job is easy. When I needed a summer or temporary job, finding work took less than a week, and in at least two cases, I was employed that same day.
No, they're not high-paying jobs, obviously, but they do provide income - Walmart, or warehouse work, in my case. They pay more than minimum wage, and especially with warehouses, you're almost guaranteed to have overtime pay each week.

Immigrated. I especially don't see why immigrants should be getting my money.

Look at all the european immigrants that came at the turn of the 1900's ....they didn't have such programs. Shit worked out great.

Texas Max Grant amount for Mom and two kids is $213 a month. WHOOOHOOO party time!!!

why are you rolling your eyes?

If you were a single parent taking care of two kids you could live on that? i doubt i could, granted if they qualify for that they probably get a small food stamp allowance and perhaps even section 8 housing. but its not a life i would enjoy living.

Its been done a million times before. I would argue more single parents survive without assistance than those that do. Also.....Its not my fucking problem you got knocked up TWICE and didn't abort or have morning afterpill.

Hmm I wonder if the rich ever ask about paying much more taxes than the middle/lower classes... I wonder if it's voluntary...

Doubt it, the rich have the resources to avoid paying taxes.

The middle class on the other hand, well everybody knows its the middle class who pay for those programs.

Because if almost everyone who fell on hard times was allowed to spiral deeper and deeper into poverty you'd have an immense increase in crime that would directly affect you. In order to stop this massive increase in crime the goverment would have to massively expand police forces and you'd have to pay more taxes to get it done.

Without them the poor will be so desperate that they will become a serious threat to safety and security. Disease will increase, crime will increase, etc. With no assistance their dead weight will be a more serious drag to society and the economy than in their current supported but operational state.

Think of it as a form of inertia...it's easier to get further ahead if you get a little help maintaining momentum. If you have no help to get you started again after a stop, you may never get anywhere.

I've been to 3rd world countries where they don't have social programs.....people are not dying of starvation ......they find a way to contribute to society and make a living. Even elderly make crafts or trinkets to sell. They find a way because they have motivation. Not dying of starvation is a great motivation.

I'm sure anyone on welfare can get the same jobs these immigrants are hustling to get. But they don't. Why should they.

Well then, why should you voluntarily live in a country where you have to unvoluntarily pay for someones way when you can simply move to a 3rd would country where you don't have to do so?

social conditions and living standards were much better then, werent they (not talking about those as a direct result of technology)

Many become become indigent due to uncontrollable circumstances. Should we let them starve to death?

Many become indigent because they are failures. Should we let them starve to death because they inherited bad genes from their parents?

Is educating them your problem? Some of your taxes go to compulsory education. Maybe we should start paying our taxes a la carte.

After reading half this thread, I've decided either A) its a masked ron paul thread or B) you love ron paul you just don't know yet.

Either way, you're wrong.

Less police, harsher punishment. We should bring back all the crazy shit........public hangings.....stoning mother fuc*ers......lets get some fear back in the public eye.....I'm talkin' Lex Talionis. You screw the system....everyone in the neighborhood gets a stone. In the past if you were accused of a crime they would string a rock to your feet and throw you in a pond....if you lived...you were innocent.....now that is some serious shit!

As stated before in this thread welfare is a great system gone bad. Physically or mentally unable to work - welfare. Otherwise get a job.....or get stoned.

I need a running mate if anyone is interested.....

This thread is some dumb shit.

We all know why we need these programs around.

Sure they aren't perfect but they avoid some seriously bad juju.

Are you being intentionally thick IcebergSlim?

to answer some of your arguments:

If 3rd world countries are so great without any public aid, move there.

If you don't like a country where you have to pay for these things, move out.

If you think that people never have hard luck, grow up.

I can't believe you think an entire laid off factory should of been thrown on the street as well, you make it sound like a peachy pony ride.
