Why do we need 2 satelite radio providers?

Um, I'm assuming you mean providers as in Sirius and XM. It's because competition is good for the consumer.

But competition in an industry no one even wants?

I would understand if there was demand, but who is going to spend the money on this stuff?

Speak for yourself. Lots of people have XM and Sirius. If I still had a car, I would definitely have it. It's nice to hear music other than the crap shoved down your throat by ClearChannel...some people like to hear a variety of music rather than the same 10 song playlist with 40 minutes of commercials per hour repeated all day.

And before you say, well why not just listen to CDs, sometimes it's nice to have someone else pick the music...plus, you can hear new artists that you otherwise wouldn't have known about.

But for a monthy fee? Is it really that good that you would pay 10 a month for when you drive?
$10 a month. 30 cents a day. I lose more money in my couch cushions or drop on the ground per month. And it's not just in your car, they have home receivers and boomboxes that you just transfer the tuner to.

So one fee gets you the ability to transfer it all around? Hmm.. that makes it sound more apealing.

Any word on which is better though? XM or Sirius? GM has adopted XM on their radios and it seems like you hear a lot more about that one then Sirius.

How much does a setup cost for people with out it in their cars already? Wouldnt adding an FM modulator to get it hooked up ruin the sound quality?

well put and I agree. I haven't tried satellite radio but I can't stand listening to regular FM radio. I do however listen to the internet radio stations through iTunes. I wouldn't mind having something like that in my car and would be willing to pay $10/month.

I just thought about it again..

Still not worth it.

$10 a month really dosent seem worth it to drive around and hear music. Just deal with it and save the $120 a year.

Like I said, speak for yourself. Just because you're cheap doesn't mean other people are.

exactly. I have XM and absoutly love it. especially on long driver. ill get tired of CDS. even tho I can play MP3s i still listen to XM alot. XM comedy would be worth it alone. its actually hard to drive listning to it

I believe many of the stations are commercial free, but many use commercials also. I strongly considered getting this service because I commute 2 hours a day, and got sick of all the local radio stations. I even got tired of talk radio because I could predict the conversations they were going to have before they started them. I may still get the service, but for now I am sticking with mp3's in my car.

No commercials and un-edited. they can say fck or shyt or whatever its great.
In between songs you may hear your listing to "______-"

I have Sirius and extremely happy with it 😀

I'm strongly considering getting one of these services. The fact of the matter is a very few big media giants own nearly all the commercial radio stations in the US today and has homogenized them. In my market, nearly all the big radio stations are owned by one company (Clear Channel). People have ranted about the decline of commercial radio for years, but it really has gotten appreciably worse in the last 5-10 years with no sign of hope in the future.

There are three rays of hope in the "radio" field: (1) college radio, and NPR to some extent when it is not fundraising. College/community radio stations can be really great, but the quality and programming varies greatly.

Secondly, there is internet radio. This looked tremendous, but Congress has crippled, and maybe killed it with a prohibitively high fee structure mandated by Congress to protect the big business radio chains.

Thirdly, there is Sirius and XM. Yes, they have monthly fees-but I already contribute at least that amount to various college and community stations.

So XM and Sirius are such a dumb idea-there is a viable market out there for them.

I remember when Everquest came out, there was this same exact debate. "Whose going to pay $10 a month to play a game"? Well, it seems like now they've got half a million subscribers. XM has close to a million now as well if I'm not mistaken. $10 a month is nothing for what they provide.

Now going to movie theater and paying $7 for tickets and $3 for popcorn, that's absurd. I can't believe that anyone would pay that. Now excuse me while I go get ready and take my brother to see 2 Fast 2 Furious...

I might get it... I mean after all, if you've got a nice car sound system (subs and what not) it might be worth it..

I just use my mp3 cd player and am happy with that for now...

XM has commercials on some stations. Sirius has no commercials. My friend has Sirius and it is pretty nice. I haven't decided if I want to get it yet though.
