Why do we hate the French?

Zeze

Lifer
I never understood this. Our media, culture, and everyone always jokingly talk about how much we hate the French. "As long as we beat the French!" etc...

Why is this the case? Historically, they haven't done much against us. They helped us beat the Brits (with their own agenda, yes) to gain independence and they gave us Statue of Liberty as a present.

If anything, it should be Brits we gained independence from...

Save your witty replies, why do we hate the French again?

Your name sounds French.

I think you are right - I like the French. I think it's a sort of idiocy behind hating them.

I think one reason with some basis is mostly about Paris for French who seem rude.

Of course there are those with mime-phobia.

One reason is sort of sick - it's to mock the French for not being militarily strong enough so that they were conquered by Hitler.

Why can't THEY go aorund the world killing non-white people like the good countries have? Funny thing is, they have. The French have a long history of pretty brutal colonization.

In particular, look at their lousy history in Vietnam - which at one point we paid most of.

Cause...they owe us, we saved them, twice. Therefore, they are sissies and must hail america for as long as we exist!

The only good thing to ever come out of France is Escoffier, Jacques Pepin, the Foreign Legion and French/any other nationality women.

Actually, that's not a bad legacy.

Yes, and america (#1 by the way) came in and saved their asses.

it could have something to do with the fascist-sympathizing Vichy French during WW2...

but I suspect this goes all the way back to things like the F&I war and relations during the early years of the country, particularly dealing with Frenchies in NewAwlins and up in Canada.

Odd, though, b/c Jefferson and Franklin were such raging Francophiles, you would think that there would be more of a history of appreciation rather than consternation.

Also, don't forget that the British and French are long-standing, butter rivals. We probably carry that as some sort of shared cultural history.

And no one--save the French--have fond memories of Napoleon.

I don't hate the French. I would love to visit France someday.

Avoid Paris. The people in the countryside were very welcoming and nice, the people in Paris were everything you have ever heard. So much so I thought they were almost a parody of themselves.

The French and Americans butt heads a lot because we're alike. Liberty, freedom, blah blah, we're both raised to believe they're awesome. I believe it has made us a more obnoxious and arrogant bunch(the two of our nations), so we butt heads on it. TBH The French are pretty cool and we have a lot more in common than we'd like to believe.

You're saying we hate the French because we hate ourselves?

Nicely done.

Culturally they are incomparable with our way of thinking:

the US is a lower power distance, higher individuality, more assertive, and risk taking culture than France is.

Why would you not hate the French? I thought this was as common as knowledge that the sun rises from the east
