Why do we get used the size of things after while?

As I sit here doing a bit of work, I recall back to when I first got this LCD. It felt HUGE compared to my old 20" LCD that it replaced.

Now the 24" LCD feels a bit small to me, dunno why.

Anyone else notice this?

You said it yourself; we grow accustomed to our surroundings. When you upgrade from a 20" to a 24" you were accustomed to the 20", so your brain was telling you that the new monitor was much larger than what you were accustomed to. Now your brain is accustomed to the 24"; you're no longer mentally comparing it to a 20", it's become the de facto monitor size in your brain. It's the same with anything; anyone who has moved into a larger house can tell you how weird it felt if they ever returned to their prior house and remarked "I remember it being bigger..."

-EDIT- Oh, I almost forgot... generic penis joke. Ha!

Just hope your gf doesn't say the same thing about you.

I've had to use 17" and 19" 5:4 LCDs at work all while I've had a 24" WS, so having to use crap 8 hours a day makes me appreciate what I've got.

That's what she said.

This.

Seriously though, I remember using a 12" laptop for a while. Seemed so TINY when I first got it! With a tiny screen to match, of course. Well, I got used to it pretty quick. And then I got a 17" LCD and it seemed like I was staring into a bottomless abyss (that's what... he said?).

My 20" LCD seems small now that I'm using my 32" LCD TV as my monitor. Now I have a craving not for more screen size but for more pixels (using a computer at 1366x768 isn't super fun).

I guess because we're a "bigger is better" type of society. Look at nearly all car models...since downsizing in the late 70s/early 80s, they've become progressively bigger in all classes.

One thing that pisses me off though is clothing sizes, which have become progressively larger. I have slightly older but decent "medium" shirts, which are now the same size as newer "small" shirts.

It's even worse for polyester athletic wear. I keep that stuff almost forever because it never wears out, but I've added to my collection over the years. Older, tighter fitting medium shirts are smaller than the baggy "small" shirts I recently bought. Dammit, I'm not getting any bigger, why should my clothes? :|

This. We tend to grow accustomed to very many things in life and tend not to even pay attention to those little details until they change. That new car you got and swore you'd never eat in... a couple months later and you're chowin' down on a Big Mac in it, because it's become no different than your old car. You know where almost everything is at, you're used to driving it... it has essentially booted your old car out and assumed the spot.

Not that I've ever eaten in my car and would smack someone for doing so!

It's a well known psychological response called Perceptive Shrinkage. Studied mostly by Perceptiveshrinkologists. Really.

When I first bought my 46" TV, I though it looked absolutely massive in my place, but now it looks small. I keep thinking I should have gone for a 52". 🙁

I sometimes think the same way about my 24" PC monitor, but then I think of the hardware I would need to run games on a 30" monitor and that thinking goes away very quickly.

My 22" feels small. But when people come over, they say, OMG that's huge!

You show your 22" to just anyone that stops by? 😉

Wouldn't you if you're packing?

Totally. I've actually removed the zippers and buttons from the front of all of my pants so the trunk can swing freely for all to see.
