my ol' westy 37" (on the right) is relegated to wife duty now :)

I don't see how you can sit that close to such a big screen. I guess it would just take some getting used to but you'd think it would be bad on your eyes.

Wouldn't it be better for your eyes than a smaller screen at the same resolution? Everything would be bigger, and the physical distance between screen and eyeball would be the same or maybe a little bit farther with the giant screen ...

My 50" tv looks small...I'll want a 70" when they are £2k for a decent one :D

Now I'm in another office and I have 2 widescreens, which are basically the same as my home monitors, but with the top cut off, and a super crappy native resolution. Sucks that everything is going widescreen now too. It's basicaly taking a normal size LCD and cutting the top off, so you lose lot of space for the same money.

I remember when I first got my 2 19"s at home. I upgraded those from a single 17 CRT and went from 800*600 to 1280*1024. Wow, what a difference that was.

but you can see 2 pages side by side....that is infinitely more useful to most people than a couple extra vertical inches. don't think about it as lopping off the top. think of it as adding to the sides of a shorter monitor to begin with...

Monitor upgrades are addicting. Jump as high as you can up the chain so you don't hit every step on the way up. I'm in the process of adding two 20.1" 4:3 panels in portrait to flank my 30" (that I've had for less than 6 months), I think I'll be good for a while since I'll have no real upgrade path. 4960x1600 should keep me happy.

And a screen that big with maximized web browser? Blah.

It doesn't become small to me really, but the "wow" goes away pretty fast.

I think the weirder thing is when I sit down in front of a smaller monitor I never think "Wow! This is so small!". I might think its a little smaller but most of the time I don't even notice.

One thing that pisses me off though is clothing sizes, which have become progressively larger. I have slightly older but decent "medium" shirts, which are now the same size as newer "small" shirts.

It's even worse for polyester athletic wear. I keep that stuff almost forever because it never wears out, but I've added to my collection over the years. Older, tighter fitting medium shirts are smaller than the baggy "small" shirts I recently bought. Dammit, I'm not getting any bigger, why should my clothes? :|

Because most Americans are getting bigger. They just don't want to know about it!

Yea, I'm well aware. It's a very disturbing trend, but I guess companies have to cater to it since so many people are overweight/obese. Just sucks for the rest of us who are actually at a healthy weight.
