Why do VWs have to be unreliable???

I have never heard Germans in Germany complain about their VWs.... Maybe they are built not as good as the ones in Germany?

uh...my '99 Passat was built in Germany.

I love my Jetta. I hate my Jetta.

I bought it Certified Pre-Owned with 25,000 miles on it - a silver badass lookin' 1.8T, black leather seats, sunroof, 17in alloys. And this is not a joke; as I was driving it off the LOT on the night I bought it, the water pump failed, the check engine light came on, and one of the cooling fans failed. I was still in the freakin' dealer parking lot! We pushed it back in to the service bay and they gave me a loaner to drive home. They fixed everything the next day and replaced both fans for good measure.

Ok, so not such a good first impression. 1 week later the CEL comes on AGAIN. Not a big deal, I ran some injection cleaner in the next tank and cleaned up the carbon deposits. CEL cleared within an hour.

Happy happy, love the car, get to about 6 months later, CEL. Need a tune-up. Ok ok, this is normal maintenance, no biggie, I get the tune-up. Car runs great. I'm just loving it.

6 months later, I'm driving home from the beach and the alternator dies. And because of that, the battery dies 10 minutes later. Other than being stranded for 2 hours, it's all good, all the work is covered with the warranty. I do buy a new battery, though.

Enter 4 weeks ago. Happy happy driving home from work on a Friday night, and boom! CEL comes on. W T F!

So the coolant had been compromised, someone poured regular anti-freeze in with the G12 and rotted the guts out. The reservoir was destroyed, there's multiple oil leaks, a strut mount had broken off, etc etc, etc a whole LIST of things.....WTF?

"We can get all this done for ya by tomorrow, it'll run ya about $2,050."

"HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?!?!"

-calm down-

"uhh, yeah, shouldn't most of that be covered under the BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY?"

"Let me check.....yes, but you also need a brake flush, a coolant flush, a tranny flush, and we strongly recommend blah BLAH BLAH DA FREAKITY BLAH."

So they took care of the CEL, and we scheduled a time for me to come and get the rest of the warrantied work done. Next Tuesday? Sounds good.

I take it in Tuesday and they apparently LOST the work order. So the tech "tries" to find all the things they originally found wrong with it, BEFORE they found out it was covered under the warranty.

So who knows what is still broken, and I have 1,000 miles left till the 2 year or 26k mile CPO warranty is up. And guess what then?

Yeah, I can't afford the maintenance on this car, and I still owe 3 1/2 years on it!

I love my Jetta. I hate my Jetta

And I strongly advise anyone in here to NOT buy a Jetta or any other VW for that matter. The Taureg's are the some of the worst. Jetta's are up there, GTI's are up there.

I love my car, though. Really do. God it's so fun to drive.

How about this, they're not nearly as bad as people make them out to be.

Seriously, you should write for VW's advertising department.

Why? I don't recall ever making other comments on VW's on this forum, ever.

I'm just posting from personal experience.

I have 110K miles on my Windstar I've put about 1G that I'd consider to be a 'repair' not maintenance
Every time I feel like looking a VW I just read one of these threads and I'm cured!

No really, your post speaks volumes about VW reliability. It's probably the most flattering thing I've ever heard anyone say about a VW car actually.

How about this for a new ad...

VW, we only leave you on the side of the road once every 4 years.

That's what I said and was my personal experience. I had a Subaru for just over 2 years and it left me at the side of the road once too. Was it twice as unreliable as a VW?! 😉

I was very interested in a GTI before I got my Mazda3 HB, but I went with the Mazda because it was cheaper, has more interior space and that whole reliability thing was stuck in the back of my head.

Thinking of getting a GTI pretty soon. Are they really as bad as some of you say?

Yes.

They are SUPPOSED to be better but i rather not be the test subject for that, esp since you have to pay to be the test subject. 🙂

My sister in-law just got a Audi A4 (read fancy VW) and after having less then a month already needs a O2 sensor.

Ex wife has an 03' Golf with ~80K miles on it it has developed a mysterious vibration at speed the dealership can't sort out (or 2 independent mechanics)

If it were mine I'd replace the struts and driveshafts/CV joints, but I sort of figure I'd keep my mouth shut since we're divorced & all 😱

I'd take any other brand rather than a VW/Audi.

Interesting...I think I've narrowed down the problem...its you! 😛

It's really down to the coil-pack debacle a few years ago and people in the US can't seem to get that out of their heads.

Saying that, I had a Mk4 V6 4Motion from new in 2000 and it needed the warranty, but only left me on the side of the road once in four years.

My 2003 Nissan has never left me on the side of the road and I've owned it for 5 years and almost 70,000 miles.

My Integra left me on the road after 10 years and 205k miles (worn on ignition coil).
My corolla not yet left me on the road after 13 years and 173k miles.
My dad's taurus left him on the road at 60k miles and 5 years due to a dead battery.
