Why do the idiots on "COPS" always say yes when the cops ask to search thier cars?

As long as you really are clean, refuse. In fact, my refusal line is "Having asked for my permission to perform an unwarranted search of my property I now formally request legal counsel be present in accordance with the suggestions of the ACLU." It seems ridiculous, but I've actually told them no that way twice and they gave me back my license and stuff and sent me on my way (with them and their buddies close behind me of course). When they follow you afterwards just find the first public place you can and park the car...they'll get tired eventually and go away while you play at the park or whatever. This is actually what the ACLU suggests btw

I'm actually on the police side most of the time, but I won't accept infringement of my rights for stupid reasons while real criminals walk free. As a side note, always carry an NRA and an ACLU card with you...if you ever get asked to come in for a jury duty screening let them fall out when you're trying to pull out your license and they'll immediately dismiss you (worked every time so far). 😎

i don't think that's true.
I assume you mean my quote about the radar gun?

Yes it is true. I am legally entitled to see the evidence that can be used against me. I do have friends in the police dept too. I try to keep up on the latest stuff.

Police officers do not have to show you their radar gun readings, but some will upon request.

i really hate the cops in my town. i have been pulled over twice while driving at night for no reason. both times because i crossed over the yellow line aka complete bullshit. i love the questions they ask me. "Have anything in the car I should know about?" it took me real long to think of a response for that one. another time, "been drinking tonight?" these guys are a bunch of losers looking to get kids in trouble for stupid stuff. after the einstein questions they then whip out the flashlight and start scopin out the car through the windows. i try not to be an a-hole to the cops but i really have no respect for these guys who are going beyond their legal limitations. maybe they've got a camera or something and are hoping ill say yes to a "Do you have nucs under the backseat" question so they can make a few bucks selling their tape to COPS.

How would they make any money selling a tape to COPS? COPS goes on the scene with the police and they do not accept tapes...

BTW, how were they going beyond their legal limitations?

Maybe not COPS but some of those shows do take submitted tapes.

I was stopped twice in Dec. 02 for no reason. The second time, the cop even called for backup. Guess both needed to fill up their quota for the month.

i don't think that's true.

Speaking of, here's a question i was trying to find the answer to. On private property, ie a residence (frat house type) if an undercover is trying to gain entrance, and is asked whether or not they are a cop, do they have to admit it by law. The point here is that its private property, i know on the streets, ie a sting/drug buy, prostitution sting they can lie. anyone know?

He never said that a cop is a dick just because he wants to search a car. He said that some cops ARE, and WILL search your car because of it. If a cop has a hair up his ass, then he'll be more likely to thoroughly investigate what's going on, rather than letting it slide. I think you're twisting Fooey's words... I don't exactly agree with what he's saying, but don't try to turn his words around on him.

No I am not "twisting" his words. Read EXACTLY what he said.

Any cop that searches your car without consent or probable cause is a dick and corrupt.

You seem to be intimately familiar with that territory.

in regard to "Cops" yes...a roach will not lead to someones car getting impounded...

The question I often ask when watching that show is "Why the hell did they run, when they were getting pulled over for running a Stop Sign"

Because they're "idiots on "COPS"" 😛
I always liked the one where the cop asked the guy repeatedly if he had been drinking or smoking anything. The guy kept saying no, he hadn't.
The cop says "well then, what's this behind your ear".
The guy had a joint stuck over his ear. OOPS!!! 😀

Sadly ... I got the video of it. Lemme check my TV capture.

EDIT: Video

The officers usuaslly find reason to use the proable causes to search in the car; however, they must have your permission or get warrant when they need to search in your private trunk. So it is wise to say 'NO" and if the police still search without your permission, the court will may throw the case away once the judge learns that you already protest the search without warrant. The police still can't search in the car unless they suspect something illegal or arrest you. If you are pulled over for only speeding, they cant search peroid. Also the officer must tell you why you re being pulled over.

If I get pulled over and don't nothing wrong, I still will say "NO and get warrant peroid" . If they waste my time, therefore, I waste their time...

i have seen episodes when they refuse
if i recall correctly the officer then called the canine unit and had the dog walk around the outside of the car and sniffed under it..it started barkign and then they searched it ..i guess the dog gave them probable cause , that and the two peopel in the car had confliting stories about where they were going

How's that? Is that a joke gone bad or something?

The yellow line is there for a reason. If you cross it, you're committing a moving violation. If you're really smarter than these cops like you think or say you are, you'll be careful about how you drive when you're on your way home at night.

And show some respect for the police officers in your town. Sure, they need to make money for their department (a.k.a. pulling over moving violators like YOU), but when you're really in trouble they'll do their best to help you out.

I think it's possible that he's saying that the cops made up the part about the yellow line and just used it as an excuse to pull him over.

No cop I know (and I know a lot - I work in a police department) would pull someone over for a fictional violation. There's always something, whether it's a burned out tail light or crossing over the yellow line. If someone is driving recklessly or their car is in disrepair, there's a SLIGHT chance that other, more criminal things could be happening.

Most of the time, they're just given a warning and sent on their way. But, especially since Sept. 2001, it's up to police officers around the country to make our cities safer. If that means pulling over people for small offenses, so be it - but don't we all want a safer country?

Bottom line - if you didn't do anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about. But since this guy got pulled over twice, I'm ASSUMING that he was doing something illegal both times.

Ive been pulled over multiple times without explanation, even when I asked for one. I was driving a crappy car in the "good side" of town. That got me pulled over on at least five seperate occasions. Since getting a newer car, I have yet to be pulled over.

Usually they would tail me for a mile or two, then decide to turn on their lights right as I turn into some area (neighborhood, shopping center, etc). This would always occur at night. I once got pulled over as I was leaving a friends house. They came around the corner as I was getting into my car, that was parked on the side of the road. As I started to leave they turned on their lights and pulled me over. First thing they did was ask what I was doing in the neighborhood. I told them it was none of their business. They would look around in my car and ask if I had any "guns, knives or drugs". NO. Then they ask if they could search and I tell them no.

One time the cop came up, opened my door and told me to put my hands on the steering wheel. He looked around my car, asked the same ol question, and after I told him no, he started looking at the door carefully, checking the lining. Its always the "suspicious vehicle" excuse after they run all my info.

And your point? People don't seem to understand that cops have to do some sort of profiling in order to catch criminals. Every time a cop in the department I work at stops someone, they run their plate and driver's license number through the computer. They've arrested drivers on outstanding warrants several times.

We all want a safer country - and that can't happen if cops (our first line of defense - eyes and ears, you might say) don't take some initiative and stop suspicious persons and vehicles. Stop complaining. I'll say it again: If you didn't do anything wrong, you don't have anything to worry about. Did those two traffic stops hurt you in any way? It's a cop's job to keep an eye out for suspicious activity. From your description of the situation, you were a suspicious person.

So, you think because someone says "No occifer, you cain't search mah car"...they are gonna let them drive away. Thats even better than the weiner crack.
Unless they have probable cause (their is a haze of bong smoke, they see a pistol lying out etc) they cannot search your car without a warrant. Say I'm sorry officer I would prefer you not search my car without a search warrant. He gets pissed and you drive off (slowly he will probably want to bust your @$$ again) No judge is going to issue a search warrant simply because an officer has a hunch you might have something, that falls under the category of unnecessary search and seizure.
