Why do the idiots on "COPS" always say yes when the cops ask to search thier cars?

Usually they would tail me for a mile or two, then decide to turn on their lights right as I turn into some area (neighborhood, shopping center, etc). This would always occur at night. I once got pulled over as I was leaving a friends house. They came around the corner as I was getting into my car, that was parked on the side of the road. As I started to leave they turned on their lights and pulled me over. First thing they did was ask what I was doing in the neighborhood. I told them it was none of their business. They would look around in my car and ask if I had any "guns, knives or drugs". NO. Then they ask if they could search and I tell them no.

One time the cop came up, opened my door and told me to put my hands on the steering wheel. He looked around my car, asked the same ol question, and after I told him no, he started looking at the door carefully, checking the lining. Its always the "suspicious vehicle" excuse after they run all my info.
And your point? People don't seem to understand that cops have to do some sort of profiling in order to catch criminals. Every time a cop in the department I work at stops someone, they run their plate and driver's license number through the computer. They've arrested drivers on outstanding warrants several times.

We all want a safer country - and that can't happen if cops (our first line of defense - eyes and ears, you might say) don't take some initiative and stop suspicious persons and vehicles. Stop complaining. I'll say it again: If you didn't do anything wrong, you don't have anything to worry about. Did those two traffic stops hurt you in any way? It's a cop's job to keep an eye out for suspicious activity. From your description of the situation, you were a suspicious person.

Im missing my keys. Let me look through your closet. If you didnt take them you have nothing to worry about.

It doesnt work that way.

Those stops were degrading, and they were without cause. They had no reasonable cause to have suspicion of me. Being poor isnt a crime. If they wanna tail me, they can do that all day. Once they PULL ME OVER without reasonable cause, that is going too far. There is a difference in keeping an eye out and watching a "suspicious" vehicle, and actually pulling one over. We'd all be safer if everyone was locked in rooms all day, that doesnt mean its worth the "safety". Its not a crime to drive a crappy car in a nice part of town. If you want to call it suspicous enough to warrant keeping an eye on me, okay, I can live with that. Having a crappy car IS NOT AND EXCUSE TO PULL SOMEONE OVER.

If I didnt do anything wrong I should NOT have to worry about being pulled over. I shouldnt fear that. I have done nothing wrong. I dont deserve to be treated like a criminal for 5-10 minutes before they realize that Im clean. I shouldnt have to deal with the hassle or the degradation. I did absolutely nothing to warrant it.

Whats really ugly about the entire situation is that upgrading to a newer car has made it so that has NEVER happened again. I have been profiled for driving a crappy car. I hear about black people being profiled for driving in a nice area while black. I can get a new car. They cant get a new complexion (besides Michael Jackson).

Edit: How is leaving a friend's house suspicious activity? Do you realize how many millions of times each day people leave their friend's house?

No I am not "twisting" his words. Read EXACTLY what he said.

sigh. millennium, you're having a little trouble in the reading comprehension department. Fooey said "some cops search your car because they are jerks." but you seem to think Fooey said "cops are jerks because they search your car." there IS a big difference.

let's try some other examples:

"Fooey:" "I took a hot shower because I was cold."
"Millenium:" "I was cold because I took a hot shower."

"Fooey:" "I punched a hold in the wall because I was mad."
"Millenium:" "I was mad because I punched a hole in the wall."

"Fooey:" "I ate a sandwich because I was hungry."
"Millenium:" "I was hungry because I ate a sandwich."

"Fooey:" "I like that girl because she is a babe."
"Millenium:" "That girl is a babe because I like her."

I could go on and on, but I think we all get the picture. When you twist cause and effect, you end up with a completely different (and in some cases impossible) statement. Fooey did NOT say that cops are jerks because they search your car. so don't put those words into his/her mouth.

There's always something, whether it's a burned out tail light or crossing over the yellow line. If someone is driving recklessly or their car is in disrepair, there's a SLIGHT chance that other, more criminal things could be happening.

Most of the time, they're just given a warning and sent on their way. But, especially since Sept. 2001, it's up to police officers around the country to make our cities safer. If that means pulling over people for small offenses, so be it - but don't we all want a safer country?

Bottom line - if you didn't do anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about. But since this guy got pulled over twice, I'm ASSUMING that he was doing something illegal both times.
I've been pulled over once for supposedly crossing over the double yellow. This was absolute garbage, but I just figured he was doing a sobrietary check. He saw that I wasn't drunk, gave me a written warning, and sent me on my way.

I was pissed he pulled me over for no reason, but at least he wasn't a dick about it.

I have been hassled many times and even handcuffed on two seperate occasions when I have not been doing anything wrong. You say "If you didn't do anything wrong, you don't have anything to worry about", but that's a load of crap.

What he said was this "Sometimes a cop asks to search because they are d8cks or corrupt"

That means that they can either be searching your car beccause they are a dick or corrupt or it could mean because they search they are a dick or corrupt. If you think I have a reading comprehension problem you are way off. They problem is what he said was a double edged sword and EITHER WAY it still is the typical fvcking pothead logic. "Man the cops are hassling me cause I smoke something that you can make ropes out of... it is a plant man. WTF man. Man man man."

If you want to argue with them about policing and drug laws I am happy to. I am not going to argue with ANYONE about the legality of Pot because it IS illegal. I most certainly don't have a reading problem, nor do I have some type of foggy memory. I clearly understand exactly what he was implying.

"Sometimes a cop asks to search because they are d8cks or corrupt"

Now you tell me what you think that means.

They degraded you by pulling you over in a routine traffic stop? What a fvcking whiny little man. How exactly were you degraded? Also, it IS suspicious for a "crappy" car to be in a "nice" area. Please drop the PC liberal crap at the door if you want to argue profiling and methodology of policing.

How do you know they were pulling you over because of your age? It could have been your Age. How do you know they didn't receive a call saying you looked suspicious? You are full of assumption with no facts to back up what you say happened.

Any cop that searches your car without consent or probable cause is a dick and corrupt.

You seem to be intimately familiar with that territory.

How's that? Is that a joke gone bad or something?

I guess reading is not your strong suit. Let me dumb that down for you. You seem to have enough experience with the police that having you car searched is a daily occurrence. I always seem to have to dumb things down to a fifth grade level for you to understand them. I thought you had a degree?

I drove the 83 Cadillac for 1 year and was pulled over 5 times without cause. In 3 years of driving a 91 Taurus I have never been pulled over. That is why I dont determine it to be my age or any other cause. I drive in the same areas, and drive with the same caution. The only thing that changed in that time was the automobile. \

Edit: Since when is it reasonable to pull someone over for being young? They should start profiling high schools big time if thats reasonable.

Ever heard of a curfew? Anyways you are basing your experience on the fact that you changed cars and it stopped. Did you ever think that it might have been something other than the car? No because that wouldn't fit into your liberal and BS PC mantra.

Yes I have heard of curfews. I dont see how driving one car can get me pulled over 5 times in a year, and another can get me pulled over ZERO times in three years. If curfew was an issue, why did they pull me over before curfew time in our town? Why would curfew no longer matter three months later driving a different car (since I would get pulled over a little more than once every three months)? I have often wondered if there is another explanation, but none fits.

I dont think you are quite understanding what is happening here. I would get pulled over nearly once every two months, for around a year. Now for over THIRTY SIX consecutive months I have yet to get pulled over once (I am still the exact same size as I was before, 5'8" and 130lbs so I would appear to be "violating curfew" during non curfew hours just the same). I would love to think there is a reasonable explanation for it, but from my experiences, there is only one. Profiling.

I didnt even realize that it was a problem, or that I was an exceptional case until I realized I was no longer being pulled over all the time. Talking with others, I find it quite out of place for me to get pulled over multiple times for no reason.

And if you are able to think up a reasonable explanation, I would love to hear it.

I DO NOT want a safer country at the expense of personal freedom. No way.

I have been hassled many times and even handcuffed on two seperate occasions when I have not been doing anything wrong. You say "If you didn't do anything wrong, you don't have anything to worry about", but that's a load of crap.

Thats funny because I have never been handcuffed for doing nothing wrong. That is weird. Have you ever been abducted by aliens too?

You're really striking out on the jokes aren't you? I suppose it's probably not your strongpoint though.

That means that they can either be searching your car beccause they are a dick or corrupt or it could mean because they search they are a dick or corrupt.

Now you tell me what you think that means.

double sigh. there is only one possible correct meaning to that sentance as it was written. you can choose to twist it anyway you want, but the way it was written, it can have only one possible meaning.

"Sometimes a cop asks to search because they are d8cks or corrupt"

That means what it says. If fooey meant "because they search they are a dick or corrupt," i'm sure that's what fooey would have written. and since fooey has since elaborated and told us that the original sentance was correctly stated, i think we can all agree that your imaginary "meaning" for an otherwise explicit statement is false. maybe the problem isn't reading comprehension, it's an over-active imagination. the funny thing about this is, if you take fooey's statement to mean what it says, i don't think he/she has said anything that you could find particularly offensive. the only reason you got worked up was because you misunderstood what was said, and when it was clarified for you, you were too proud to admit the simple mistake.

i have no idea if fooey is a "pothead," as you imply, but claiming it clouds fooey's judgement is a case of the pot calling the kettle black (pardon the pun), given the extensive drug abuse in your own past. perhaps you've discovered some magical potion (more imagination?) that allowed your brain to emerge unscathed from the quanity of drugs you've taken, in which case, i'd like to buy a case, and i suggest you quickly get a patent for it.

I'd say yes... just be co-operative.. if you say no, then they definitely should be suspicious.. rule of thumb is to not do anything stupid in the first place!! 😛

You seem to be missing the point. If they have no probable cause there's no reason for them to be searching your car. I've been hassled to many times becuase of made-up reasons. They have no right to detain you or be looking all through your car on a whim.

Yeah right, like they're going to wake up a judge in the middle of night to say "Hey, we pulled over some guy speeding, and we think he might have a joint in the car, will you issue us a warrant?"

I do not know about your area, but in my area there is always a Judge on call for that sort of thing, so to answer your question yes there will be a judge available. Whether the cops word it the way you did, very doubtful.

I know they need a cause to get a warrant, not just a suspicion. Such as, the cop sees a roach in the ashtray or a good source tips them off(like an informant) , that is probable cause to go wake up a judge and get a warrant to search the car for more drugs. Whatever else they find is a bonus to them, but the warrant would be for Drugs......

The question I often ask when watching that show is "Why the hell did they run, when they were getting pulled over for running a Stop Sign"

Because they're "idiots on "COPS"" 😛
I always liked the one where the cop asked the guy repeatedly if he had been drinking or smoking anything. The guy kept saying no, he hadn't.
The cop says "well then, what's this behind your ear".
The guy had a joint stuck over his ear. OOPS!!! 😀

I remember that one! The Cop asked if he had been drinking or doing druging tonight, the guy replied no, then the cop said he believes the guy. Then he proceeded to reach behind the guys ear and grab the joint and show it to the guy and said "Thats why I know you didn't smoke tonight" and smiled.... What could the guy say? DOH!!

A buddy and I actually got pulled over by a detective not too long ago (Couple months) that was from a nearby county. He stopped us on a dirt backstreet (we was heading to a local canal to Bass fish).

He actually popped out from some palmetto bushes about 2 miles into the woods and just started following us real close, we thought it was a cop but wasn't sure since it was an unmarked smaller ford like a contour. We decided to pull aside and let him get around (1 lane dirt road). Well he pulled up behind us and stopped to, but didn't get out or anything, just sat there. So I decided it must not be a cop but some idiot following us so I took off real quick to get out of there (He had dark tinted windows and couldn't see inside) As soon as I did that he took off and on popped flashing blue lights on his dash. I pulled back over and stopped and got out of the car real quick but didn't go to his car, instead I just stood there. He got out and came up to me and asked what we are doing in the woods. I told him then he asked for our licenses and fishing licenses. We provide both for him. He finally gives them back after going back to his car for a while. He says we are free to go so I asked him what was the reason. he pulled us over anyway when he is out of his county. All his reply was "the red car" (The color of my car maybe? It was red at the time). He also said "Didn't you see the helicopter following you?"

To this day I swear there was no helicopter around the area at all, nor was we even back there long enough for a helicopter to follow us around. We was in the woods about 2 minutes before he showed up. I dunno what he was up to, but I do see him all the time back there now and all he does is roll down his window and wave.....

Sorry thom but you are still way off base. As far as my mental state it was never changed but I couldn't say the same for you. It has nothing to do with an imagination or my comprehension and BingBong and aluded to his marijuana usage numerous times. You are really starting to become biased towards your own arguments and types. There was no simple mistake because he said what he did. You know it is still typical pothead logic used in this thread and suprisingly it is now coming from you.

so it's probably safer to keep a bong in the trunk in a cooler than under the driver's or passenger's seat?

apparently you've decided to renounce the rules of the english language and start your own language. what's it called? i bet it's a lot of fun, because with your new special language, people could be meaning anything! Yay! Let me try this fun game, too. "I'll have the cheeseburger, please" could really mean "I was thinking of taking a class in anthropology." Or, "I spent $25 on gas today" could really mean "I think Bill is sleeping around because his hair smells like perfume." Hey, I think you're on to something, this really IS fun!

how ironic that you judge fooey because he does marijuana, then claim I'M the one who's biased for defending him. i didn't even know the slightest thing about him until you brought it up. really, who he is as a person has nothing to do with this. you made a grammatical error in your reading and the result was you misinterpreted what he meant and got bent out of shape about it. granted, given his "background" with drugs, and your own strong opinions about drugs and drug users, i can see how it would be an easy mistake for you to make. but even if the mistake was understandable, it was still a mistake. if you still can't see where you went wrong: they have remedial english classes at most local community colleges, you might want to look into them.

Sorry thom but you are still way off base. As far as my mental state it was never changed but I couldn't say the same for you. It has nothing to do with an imagination or my comprehension and BingBong and alluded to his marijuana usage numerous times. You are really starting to become biased towards your own arguments and types. There was no simple mistake because he said what he did. You know it is still typical pothead logic used in this thread and surprisingly it is now coming from you.

apparently you've decided to renounce the rules of the english language and start your own language. what's it called? i bet it's a lot of fun, because with your new special language, people could be meaning anything!

Well you can continue to criticize my reading skills but I can assure you they are top-notch. I read more than 20 books a week and I scored perfect on the ACT in reading and perfect on the PSAT in verbal. Is the attack on my "supposed" reading skills the best you can muster? Please thom grow up.

Millennium: you are the one who is wrong. BBWF said, "Sometimes a cop asks to search because they are d8cks or corrupt." My question to you is this: what part of SOMETIMES do you not understand?
