Ive been pulled over multiple times without explanation, even when I asked for one. I was driving a crappy car in the "good side" of town. That got me pulled over on at least five seperate occasions. Since getting a newer car, I have yet to be pulled over.
Usually they would tail me for a mile or two, then decide to turn on their lights right as I turn into some area (neighborhood, shopping center, etc). This would always occur at night. I once got pulled over as I was leaving a friends house. They came around the corner as I was getting into my car, that was parked on the side of the road. As I started to leave they turned on their lights and pulled me over. First thing they did was ask what I was doing in the neighborhood. I told them it was none of their business. They would look around in my car and ask if I had any "guns, knives or drugs". NO. Then they ask if they could search and I tell them no.
One time the cop came up, opened my door and told me to put my hands on the steering wheel. He looked around my car, asked the same ol question, and after I told him no, he started looking at the door carefully, checking the lining. Its always the "suspicious vehicle" excuse after they run all my info.
We all want a safer country - and that can't happen if cops (our first line of defense - eyes and ears, you might say) don't take some initiative and stop suspicious persons and vehicles. Stop complaining. I'll say it again: If you didn't do anything wrong, you don't have anything to worry about. Did those two traffic stops hurt you in any way? It's a cop's job to keep an eye out for suspicious activity. From your description of the situation, you were a suspicious person.
Im missing my keys. Let me look through your closet. If you didnt take them you have nothing to worry about.
It doesnt work that way.
Those stops were degrading, and they were without cause. They had no reasonable cause to have suspicion of me. Being poor isnt a crime. If they wanna tail me, they can do that all day. Once they PULL ME OVER without reasonable cause, that is going too far. There is a difference in keeping an eye out and watching a "suspicious" vehicle, and actually pulling one over. We'd all be safer if everyone was locked in rooms all day, that doesnt mean its worth the "safety". Its not a crime to drive a crappy car in a nice part of town. If you want to call it suspicous enough to warrant keeping an eye on me, okay, I can live with that. Having a crappy car IS NOT AND EXCUSE TO PULL SOMEONE OVER.
If I didnt do anything wrong I should NOT have to worry about being pulled over. I shouldnt fear that. I have done nothing wrong. I dont deserve to be treated like a criminal for 5-10 minutes before they realize that Im clean. I shouldnt have to deal with the hassle or the degradation. I did absolutely nothing to warrant it.
Whats really ugly about the entire situation is that upgrading to a newer car has made it so that has NEVER happened again. I have been profiled for driving a crappy car. I hear about black people being profiled for driving in a nice area while black. I can get a new car. They cant get a new complexion (besides Michael Jackson).
Edit: How is leaving a friend's house suspicious activity? Do you realize how many millions of times each day people leave their friend's house?
