Either way, I'm still above average. :D

I think the article is right. I remember 5'4" being the average. 5'6" for females? Maybe in the next generation...

And taller people can't be more intelligent. Asians FTW! ;)

I like to believe the average to be 5'9 so I can be above average. 5'10" though, and I'm outa luck.

Sides, everyone knows being asian automatically add 4" to height for intelligence and -4 to length for no good reason at all..

You picked the tallest population in the US. Average across all ethnicities is 5'9" (average for non-hispanic blacks is 5'10") for males, its 5'3.3" for females.

lol, guess i was

edit: but i still dun buy into that taller=smarter theory

The averages you gave looked like the average for non-hispanic whites.

The theory is that better nutrition during the formative years usually means greater height because of better growth. Taking this into effect, it makes perfect sense.

i believe that food doesnt play a crucial part in height

as long as your not getting starved, genes determine 95% of your height

Actually, in Japan they saw a huge increase in height after a more western diet was introduced post WWII.

I just skimmed the article, so I might've missed a bit on the health/intelligence link, but I don't recall seeing any specific correlation mentioned between adult height and intelligence. There's a blurb on taller children doing better on cognitive tests, and then a bit about how "taller individuals are more likely to select into higher-paying occupations that require more advanced verbal and numerical skills and greater intelligence," but nothing explicitly stating the existence of a link between the two properties in adults.

Also, should such a study have been conducted (either as reported in the article or elsewhere), I'd be interested in knowing if the relationship (if found) was rectilinear or curvilinear (e.g., possibly reaching a plateau in intelligence once a certain height is reached).

I thought the same thing, until I did some research. Nutrition is clearly the biggest factor in height. I couldn't find any studies that researched it and came to a different conclusion. Do your own research, you'll find the same information that I did.

If you take the children of a people who are traditionally short and put them in an environment where they have all the food they can handle and a diverse diet, the next generation will be significantly taller, and within 3 generations they'll be the same height as others in that same environment.

This is a great article.

I think the IQ thing is B.S. But bigger paychecks make sense. Taller people are more intimidating which is a nice trait to have for leadership positions.

Diet plays a huge part. Average North Koreans (who apparently eat grass b/c they're starving) are 5'4". Average south Koreans are 5'8". That's for both males and females combined.

I wish I had the study at hand, but I once read that for every inch over a certain height you will live 18 months less than had you been that height (on statistical generated averages).

Then again, I'd rather live a good life and be a confident tall guy rather than get a few extra years at the end when I'm eating purée'd baby-formula like goop.

I'm surprised the shorter guys don't make more, though. With the complex that some of them have (mostly the really shorter ones), I'm surprised they don't try and go with the money angle and put more effort into the bread they make. Perhaps some of them do, but because not all of them suffer from that mindset its not enough to change the average take in take home pay.

Only in porn and politics. It only gets more publicity in porn.

It's kind of sad how much of our ancient evolutionary programming is still so evident in our daily lives. It served us well - several hundred thousand years ago. In modern society, too much of it is just detrimental. It prompts people to become agitated over simple, petty things, be obsessed over sex too often, and it causes other conflicts over resources, even when such things are in abundance. "OMG, you ate the last donut at the office! I hate you, you bastard!" Right, like you're going to starve to death now.

Height shouldn't have bearing on someone's worth. So what, their head is slightly higher above Earth's surface than mine. Well, ok, maybe in some sectors it would be an advantage, maybe in fruit picking or something like that, where being taller allows you to be more productive.
But in a business or office environment? Your brain is what's doing most of the work then; height is, or rather, should be, irrelevant.

That's funny - taller people are smarter. Last I checked, all the NBA players are idiots, but they do make a lot of money :)
