This illicites a response, or does it elicit a response? :)

Same reason blacks give themselves African names.
They think they are holding on to their roots despite the fact they have no fucking clue what it would really be like to live that way and if given the option they would still choose the modern American way of life.

Can you imagine the Civil War fought in the age of blogs and twitter?

"Shit! The hole freakin Union Army just marched passed my farm!"

It is to remind them that if they werent a bunch of pussies and fought harder, they might have won. Thankfully the northern army, and the great hero William Tecumseh Sherman were able to prevent that and keep them in their place.

Excellent troll post! 10/10

why do southerners still have confederate flags?

The same reason people get University themed plates on their cars

That would make sense except that folks that have university plates often actually attended the universities on the plates. Everyone who fought under that flag is dead and ain't driving.

I was thinking more along the lines of pride in something that happened in the past, but yeah, they probably are dead

Probably the same reason gangbangers wear their colors. Displaying things with negative connotations is just asking for people to prejudge you. I'm not an expert on confederate history but from what I learned briefly,[/b that flag = hatred to non-southern values. The good that flag might represent means jack shit if no one outside a small circle acknowledge it.

You didn't learn very much did you.

Here you may actually learn something:

The Confederate battle flag represents all Confederates, regardless of race or religion, and is the symbol of less government, less taxes, and the right of a people to govern themselves. It is flown in memory and honor of our Confederate ancestors and veterans who willingly shed their blood for Southern independence.

That and support for Jim Crow and resistance to integration. To deny that the Confederate flag was used by white Southerns as a symbol of resistance to integration and civil rights for blacks in the South is either ignorance or intentional historic revisionism.

The "less taxes" part is a purely modern contrivance.
