I dont think that religions are trying to convert people but only trying to spread the word of god so that other can be saved and not burn in hell(according to the bible).

It's funny how many self-proclaimed non-religious people jump in here to answer a question that they do not even know the answer to.

<< Why do some religions find it necessary to "convert" people... >>

Read the Bible. It tells Christians to "go out and make desciples".

What kind of question is that?!

I too find this annoying, especially the ones that are able to worm their way into the public school system, and onto college campuses.

The religion I have in mind.....evolutionists. Isn't there supposed to be a "separation of church and state"?

🙂

edit..spell

In this day and age I find it very pompous to go out and think that you can change a person's religion or convert them to yours. This is a very elitist view that YOU are going to change someone else.

I agree. Religious groups like PETA, ACLU, NAACP, NOW, Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, ELF(the ones that burned Vail), The Trial Lawyers Association, etc...

These religious groups are very agressive and annoying, what should we do with them?

🙂

My religion (Christianity) according to the word of God (the Bible) does try to evangelize people. We do not try to "convert" people because we (meaning humans) cannot convert anyone. If I could convert someone I would already have converted many people. But true conversion is more than just getting someone to make a decision or come to my church or tithe or whatever. It is a supernatural act of God showing mercy on a sinner just as I was and still am. It is a committment to total dependence on Him.

However,

God has stated in the Bible that how can anyone be saved unless they hear. So that is the job of a Christian, to speak the truth of God and salvation from sin through Jesus Christ alone. I as a Christian only pray that God will use my or someone elses feeble attempts as His means to do this incredible act.

Well, that's my understanding with the light I have been given.

LOL Palco 😀

And it's ALF, not ELF. I should know. In high school I dated the girl who is the spokesperson for that group. :disgust:

I am a Christian that will tell you that I don't try to "convert" people, instead, I being a Christian (for the reason that I believe Christianity is the Truth) I am going to share this Truth with everyone else. I have no economic interest in it at all, to say such is ludicrous and how would one explain missionaries in China and the Sudan, who only get killed and tortured?
By the way, by telling me that it is wrong to "convert" someone, are you not by default trying to convert me to your way of thinking?
No one on this earth is or everwill be content with believing something and no one else at least hearing it or believing it.

Planned Parenthood a religion.....lol

Care to define your meaning of "religion"?

re·li·gion .....a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith .

🙂

Edit...Bober, ELF = Earth Liberation Front. What is "ALF" and are you sure they are the Vail burners?

religion

<< A cause, a principle, or an activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion. >>

Those organization he listed certainly have those qualities.

I never understood this either. Growing up in the LDS (Mormon) religion where all the children (boys especially) are ecouraged to want to grow-up to serve a mission at the age of 19. Basically you get sent to some third world country (or to a place that SEEMS like a third-world country) and try to convert the masses to the LDS religion.

I figure if the people care enough about religion, they'll seek out the denomination they want to become and that's that.

amish

A lot of times..it is not "saving" the people. What they are doing is bringing more business to their church. More people in their church equal more money.

We sure are lucky they broke the mold when they made you, Palco.

JW's are the absolute worst about this. They are on a mission for you to find their God...

LOL @ Napalm 😀

I always thought of Planned Parenthood as a place to get cheap condoms.

Isla;

I'm with you on the 10% thing...

James had some comments on what makes acceptable religion:

JAS 1:27a Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress ....

Giving 10% to God is something most churches like to encourage, of course they want you to believe that they represent God. I think 10% to widows and orphans, the needy as it were, is just as good if not a better choice.

The origin of tithing comes from LEV 27:30~33 in giving a tenth of everything you get back to God, Nu 18:21-32 instructs that tithes were to be used to maintain the Levites, whose job it was to run the temple and services...

Christians are compelled to share the word, converting people for financial gain is not a Godly mission IMO.

My guess is that most of the average people who try to convert others, truly believe they are attempting god's work and trying to help you. There are also people higher up the chain who have a different outlook.
