Why do some people keep spitting on the ground?

Marking territory. Kinda had this thought while leaving a leak at the urinal. WTH do most guys spit into a urinal? Well we're mimicking behavior that in the wild would leave our scent. And perhaps the scent from our saliva adds to that so we subconsciously have the urge to spit into the same area!!!

Habit, I suppose. The more you spit, the more saliva you produce. I used to spit in the shower all the time, and when I tried to stop, I noticed I had quite a bit in my mouth.

I only spit in a urinal to see if I can intersect my urine with my spit. It's just an aiming drill for me.

And gum is banned is it not? Which to me is a bit o'erboard. I can understand chewing being offensive in certain situations but less so than smoking. I would rather the improper disposal of gum to be punishable as with any littering (including cigarette butts and spitting).

The problem partly derives from a disconnect betwixt interpersonal and public manners and even general respect. In the absence of anyone who knows them, some volk's behavior will lapse from adherence to the Golden Rule. Of course, if it is generally acceptable as spitting is in certain sub-cultures and is apparently in China then getting over the tipping point where the vast majority dissaprove requires more than social pressure; hence, the enforcable laws.

Personally, I reckon it is literally a dirty habit. I know the smog and occasional dust storms can be bad in parts of China but prolly once you start doing it it really does become a habit. Even so, there is no acceptable reason not to use a tissue or whatever if absolutely necessary and then dispose of that properly.

I was reading about some sort of parasite the other day, hook worms or something, and a study was referenced where people who spit what they cough up had a lower incidence of intestinal infection than those that swallow. During one part of its life cycle the parasite had to move from the lungs to the intestine, you see.

Welp, those who are actually coughing stuff up should seek medical attention and have even less acceptable reason to be spitting on the ground in public since it is even more likely to spread disease than plain disgusting-enough saliva.
