Why do some items on Ebay sell for more than the same item new?

One time I was bidding on some RAM, and the price went higher than googlegear.coms price..about 20 bucks higher. This happened in 3 different auctions, with 3 different people. I emailed all of them with a link, and they all replied saying that the reason they pay more is because this seller will ship to their country (south africa, italy, egypt..respectfully) and googlegear will not.

..but I agree with the general sentiment of this thread, most ebay users are retarded.

Why would you email people? It's none of your business...

Because 95% of ebayers (rough estimate) are just smart enough to be bested by a rock in an I.Q. test. I checked there when I was looking to get my iPod and consitantly watched people pay more than you could buy one for new from Apple. Not just with the shipping either but actually bid more than they're worth. I was looking at laptops last night and they're doing the same freaking thing. Very sad place

Hey, as a student, I'm not complaining. Earlier this summer, Apple was offering $200 off on an iPod if you bought it with a Mac; turn around and eBay the thing for $230+ in profit.🙂

Damn it seems ebay is definitely a good place to get top dollar for something then. I know I've seen some other speakers go for crazy high prices. For instance Paradigm Titans V3 I can buy new for I believe $230/pair, and I've seen 6 year old V1s go for $160 + shipping recently.

Some items though are great on ebay. Just last night I won a bid on a toslink optical cable. It's going to cost me $7.45 incl shipping and it's new. Cheapest locally is $20+ tax and probably not as good.

Well damn that auction is now up to $285. It's officially more expensive than buying the item new. And then this sub is no more than $350 new locally (this one is 18 months old). I expect it will go even higher by the time the auction is finished. I'm clearly not going to find one of these at a reasonable cost ($200 is tops I'd pay for a sub that's $280 new), so I guess I'll have to buy one new 🙁

Probably for the same reason that most people would warn you before you step into a pothole.
