Why do some items on Ebay sell for more than the same item new?

StageLeft

No Lifer
Example. I can buy that subwoofer new for $280 locally, as can most people. Here though it's already been bid up to $280. Shipping will be $18 minimum (I emailed the buyer), which means that even if the bidding doesn't go any higher the winner of that bid will be paying new retail for an old used sub.

It's been my experience that the shipping price often just becomes an afterthought, kinda like the $$ used on gas to go grocery shopping.

Depends on the buyer I guess.

either they are

#1. Retarded

#2. filthy rich

#3. both.

another question. im new to ebay thing 🙂Q) and i tried to bid on some items and sometimes the bid goes up instantly as soon as i make the highest bid, what gives!! (ie. it was $20, i bid $24 and someone bids $25 as soon as i press "bid") key.. weird..

That someone must have put a higher bid on the item. It automatically ups his bid to his maximum if someone tries to outbid him.

They have set their maximum bid above yours, and so it automatically bids high for them.

I want to buy some used speakers, but based on other speaker auctions of paradigm equipment it seems that people are willing to pay ludicrous prices for used stuff, so I'll probably be forced to buy new at barely more than used.Grr!

Someone's stupid enough to pay $1.10 for a dollar bill @ an auction.

note to self:

start selling dollar bills on ebay for starting price of $1.10😉

You didn't read? That subs been modded. It's got double the factory power and the coils have been re-wound for more efficiency and better performance. It'll now play lows down to .01Hz and the highs will rival your favorite tweeter.

Or people are just lazy and don't bother searching elsewhere, even when it's a few clicks away.

It's because the person bid higher than 24$. See.. Let's say the auction was at 19$. The guy bids 30$, but the price of the auction only goes up by 1$(or the minimum bid price). IF someone else bids say 24$, eBay automatically applies his bid up to the next highest point- making it 25$. It's called proxy bidding.

That's why you have to kinda be tricky, and bid strange numbers. You never really know how much someone has bid.. so you have to be fast sometimes if you're trying to snipe by hand. I'd say generally they only go up a few dollars at a time..

My favorites are the auctions that get bid up high enough that the "buy it now" option disappears. I wonder if the winning bidder who pays $100 more than the buy it now price feels like a fool??

I think that they are just retarded.

speaking of subwoofers, anyone have a link to that topic where you run 30hz in a subwoofer make a woman on it? There was link to a video in the thread..

I hope so 🙂 But I guess people love to win auctions, kind of like a game...

Here is an example..

One time I was bidding on some RAM, and the price went higher than googlegear.coms price..about 20 bucks higher. This happened in 3 different auctions, with 3 different people. I emailed all of them with a link, and they all replied saying that the reason they pay more is because this seller will ship to their country (south africa, italy, egypt..respectfully) and googlegear will not.

..but I agree with the general sentiment of this thread, most ebay users are retarded.

I can see that point... in this case of course, the seller will ship only to US addresses though 🙂

Part of it is the THRILL of the win. for some people it's WIN at all costs. 🙂 so it ends up costing them MORE than if they had bought it retail.

but in their minds they derived the satisfaction of knowing they'd WON and that is worth more to them than the difference in cost of buying EBAY vs buying Retail.

this doesn't happen as much as it used to in my mind.

I've seen someone bid $20.10 for a $20 amazon.com coupon on eBay 😕

I ask myself that all the time, Skoorb. It's sad, really.

But it's nearly the same thing in the FS/FT forum here. Sellers asking retail or more for a used product. They base their sale price on what they paid for it, not on what it is worth on the market.

There was a guy selling used Klipsch 5.1s for around $310 with shipping. I can buy them new for $299 shipped.

The sad thing is, people buy their used crap for those prices.

Because 95% of ebayers (rough estimate) are just smart enough to be bested by a rock in an I.Q. test. I checked there when I was looking to get my iPod and consitantly watched people pay more than you could buy one for new from Apple. Not just with the shipping either but actually bid more than they're worth. I was looking at laptops last night and they're doing the same freaking thing. Very sad place

Yeah, I don't know what it is about ebay. I think that people automatically think they will get a deal on there, and then end up having to win, so they increase their amount they are willing to pay, until they end up regretting the purchase.

I got my car on Ebay for $4500 less than KBB value for an independent seller. As I was bidding on it, I had bid on a few others in about a month's time, and watched as these cars went for $2-3k over KBB.

My rule of thumb is if you want a deal on Ebay, you have to be patient. Eventually you will catch the auction you want, and you will get the deal you are looking for. My other rule is never increase the amount you are willing to bid. Set it at the price you want, and don't give in to the temptation to go higher. Of course these rules do not apply when you are bidding on my auctions. 🙂

I'm tempted to add the line: "No whiners allowed to bid" to my auctions.

Sold a DVD player & god, I never thought the a$$hole would ever stop emailing me.

Idiot shipped it back to me Priority mail for $21, I just covered it, chalked it to a lame buyer.

I think the last thing that got him mad was that PP took it's usual chunk out of the refund I gave him.

yeah i have wonderd that myself.

i was looking at getting a used PS2 (mine died :frown: ) and i found many with BIN cost of $150 +$25 shipping. uh hmm i can go to wal mart and buy a new one for that price!

i buy and sale a lot of ebay. I love saleing. i always get a good price. Buying sucks i bid on a lot of items but only win 1 out of say 25 items. i know the price i am willing to pay and dont go above it.
