Why do sodas taste so much better when they cost $5.50?

For some reason, sodas taste so much sweeter and better when it costs about 5.50 at a ballpark or a movie theater for a medium size with no refill.

Maybe they use more syrup. Cheap places are stingy with the syrup. Maybe it's the placebo effect. Somebody do a scientific study.

It's the psychology of the perceptual contrast principle; your mind circumvents the normal reasoning associated with quality discernment in favor of the "expensive == good" idea relative to the "normal" drink.

The principle is very real, but I can't say if it's necessarily psychosomatic or not.

Possibly but doubtful. The profit from post mix systems is a 60-70% margin which is quite nice.
The average customer can tell when they get a watered down soda and will usually say something about it. So it in most cases its not worth trying to skim a few pennies extra out of a bag if syrup "at least not in a restaurant but most likely in the stadium where the lines are long and Joe Schmoe is not going to wait in line again to complain.

Exactly. Post Mix is <15 cents, including cup. That shouldn't be an issue.

VINCENT: Can I have a sip of that? I'd like to know what a five-dollar shake tastes like.

MIA: Be my guest. You can use my straw, I don't have kooties.

VINCENT: Yeah, but maybe I do.

MIA: Kooties I can handle.

VINCENT: Goddam! That's a pretty fvckin' good milk shake.

MIA: Told ya.
