refuse to use cruise control when they can't maintain anything close to a constant speed?

Do they not realize that their =/- 10mph is really annoying and frustrating, do they not care or are they trolling the 40 bazillions cars behind them?
 
what amazes me every day is how many people do not know wtf the left lane is for. it's just incredible.

it's also incredible how there is traffic EVERY DAY at this same spot simply because there is a turn on the highway. 1 idiot slows down and then EVERYONE behind him slows down and it causes the domino effect that lasts hours.

i just can't believe how many people are 100% clueless as to how to use a 2000+ pound device to get from point A to point B. we do have the dumbest drivers in the country in the DMV area though.

as for the OP, i see that daily as well especially on hills, where people's speeds will drop 10-20mph just because they are going up a hill and don't understand the simple concept of giving more gas to maintain current speed. drives me crazy.

that's also another area i see traffic almost daily on my commute, where it speeds up down this big hill, then as soon as you hit the top of the hill where there is a turn, you see a bunch of brake lights.

and this is around 2:45pm, not like primetime rush hour or anything.

idiots all around.
 
Yes, people are poor at regulating speed, but I don't think cruise control is the answer. People don't need further disconnection from the act of driving unless we can disconnect all the way.
 
Yup to both of the above posts.

Summary: people are dumb.

No cruise control and not staying right except for passing drives me insane on highways.
They go 120km, then 110, then 120, then 110, fucking maintain a speed.
If they are doing that while staying in left lane. OMFG DIAF.

I only use CC for long trips. If I'm going to Lansing or Kzoo or farther. Other than that, I get better gas mileage if I go manual. I made it from the office to the MLK exit in Lansing and only had to brake 4 times. I felt like a super hero!

The only thing people do on the road that bothers me is not use a turn signal at an intersection with a green light. Do I get to turn or not? Who knows. Everyone looks like they're going straight...
 
I use cruise control all the time since my car has adaptive cruise control. Slows me down when the people in front of me slow down, then gets me back up to speed when needed.

I do set it at 28 (which according to the radar speed sign in the area I am doing 27) in my subdivision since the posted speed is 25 and there are a lot of kids that live in the area. Prevents the jackasses behind me from going 35. It's a damn side street, not a race course.

Where I live we have 3-4 lane highways. So 8 lanes total in some areas, 4 each side. Some of these facts are lost on people I think. When the rural types throw a hissy fit on a 2 lane road about going faster on the right. None of those rules really apply to a 4 lane highway. Its dangerous to pass a truck on the right for example, and you don't want to pass on the right and trap someone in the middle lanes who needs to get over, but it happens all the time. It just requires sound judgement. I remember going to asheville for a week and when I came back and I was like holy shit I never really realized I was so used to driving on a 4 lane highway. It still struck some awe in me at the scale of the thing even though I grew up driving on them. In the Asheville area there probably isn't a 4 lane highway in a 100 mile radius.

A 1-2 lane road and a 4 lane road are totally different.

The northeast via population density is littered with 4 lane highways but out in the midwest there are practically none. I would imagine Cali is the only place like driving in the North east.

Would you really rage at the 500 cars that will pass you on the right on a 4 lane highway in rush hour? Like really? I just can't envision it.

From my observations, they don't even know they are varying their speed because they are ON THE DAMN PHONE!
 
I drive a highway to work daily. One lane each way for the majority. I see this at least 2-3 times a week.

Odd thing is, it comes to a point where the road switches from one lane each way, to two lanes each way. The speed limit does NOT change. 60 MPH the entire way through. Drivers are NOTORIOUS for going 70 when there are passing lanes, and then shutting it down to 61 when it switches to one lane each way.

I've gotten to the point where I try to pass people when I can before it cuts down to one lane, but I inevitably get stuck behind someone who I simply cannot catch up to because they are also going 70 when I would've had the chance to pass.

In the end, when it is one lane each way, there is usually enough traffic to make it not worth the effort to pass. And it usually seems that there is enough traffic coming the opposite way that passing is difficult.

Any more I simply drive whatever speed the person in front of me is going and deal with it, so long as it is the speed limit. I tend to prefer setting the cruise at 65 (5 over), but there is no sense getting upset about driving 60.

Oh, and turns... gradual easy curves in the road... yep, better slow down and go 55 round those. That's simply too dangerous.

in my post, i'm referring to a 4 lane highway.

a 2 lane and 4 lane road aren't different in the sense that the left lane is for passing. if you think so, you are part of the problem.
 
Because most people are really dumb about things they don't consider to be their job or their business.

I recently ran into an office manager that uses the computer all day every day, but they didn't know about keyboard shortcuts. They're not a computer person, they handle paperwork and accounts, so why would they ever give something like shift-tab a single thought? And don't even think about fancy stuff like control+f or how alt+(underlined letter in menu) can be used to access functions without using menus. They're great at their job though, and that office wouldn't last a week without them.

EDIT:

Highways are a bit different here than a lot of other places. Our speed limit is 70MPH but in reality anything under 80 is fine. So during rush hour the left lane will be doing 75-80, the middle lane 70-75 and the right lane is usually for speeding up and slowing down. So if you jump into the right lane doing 80, there is a very good chance someone is going to change into your lane needing to slow down to exit. Even in MI we don't take exit ramps at 80.

dildo comes roaring up behind me, passes me on the left (fine) probably doing 80 or so

2 mins later, I catch up to dildo. Still doing 65, I pass him rather swiftly.

2 mins later, dildo comes roaring up behind me, passes me doing 80.

2 mins later, I catch up to dildo AGAIN, pass him easily

2 mins later... here comes dildo

My wife's car has Eyesight, which is Subaru's system for Adaptive Cruise Control. It's basically the best feature ever...turn it on when you get on the highway, don't touch the gas or brake until you take the exit off. It's amazing...as close to a self-driving car as I've personally been in. Worth every penny, definitely want it on my next car! :thumbsup:
