We know how things work, how people function (or can't function) and how businesses function. We pretty much know everything. We set expectations - what you can do, what you can't do, where you can go and when things will get done, if things will get done. We set the railroad for everyone to get from point A to B in an A to Z fashion. When people do stupid things ie: doing something they were told not to do because it would cause problem A, we become upset - hence, we are generally upset every single day. Just do as we tell you and we'll get along quite nicely.

Does this mean that someone on the sales team should treat them poorly because of this? No, so why the reverse?

How about this, while the doctor is doing a heart transplant, why don't you tell him he is doing it wrong and he should be doing {whatever}. Let's see what that doctor says. I'm pretty sure he'd say, "get him out of here."

*User gets to the part of installation where it asks if you agree to the license agreement*
"Should I click okay?"
"I don't know, have you suddenly become unsure of whether you want to install the program or not? Can you read? Do you really need me to tell you whether you agree or not? YES, CLICK OKAY YOU MORON."

How about getting paged at 4:00am because a user got a pop up with only one answer, "OK." Now he want to know what to do. Seriously, are you fvcking kidding me?!

Any time you pair together one person who knows about something with a person who doesn't you're going to find. . . condensation.

I agree with that. So is the problem the computer itself. Since they are so wide spread everyone thinks they are a master of its processes. Since we do not have a operating room in our office, maybe it happens a little less with other professions, such as the medical field. But since the computers are everywhere everyone thinks they know best. I am starting to see why it would be very frustrating for the IT people when it happens constantly all day long.

Often we need to ask condescending type questions because some important detail that you might have left out.

"What does the screen do when you try to click compose"

"nothing"

"nothing at all?, you sure?"

"yes I'm sure, I can see my screen it does nothing'

"you don't see anyyyyyyything at all, like any lil pop up, little symbol, nothing?"

"No!!!" <IT guys are so condescending!>

<I walk down to her desk>

"See this lil red stop sign that pops up that says pop up blocked that fills up a good chunk of your screen?"

"yeah...."

"Thats stopping compose from opening"

/configure pop up blocker

And things like that happen allllllllllll the time. So its not condescending, its thoroughness.

It would be great if both sides could read this topic, because now it just sounds like the nature of the position. Big offices that are having trouble with this should hold a couple of meetings between both groups so they can explain each sides frustrations. It would probably help some I would think.

"You need to restart your computer. The application you use to do your job has a memory leak and your computer has not been restarted for over 2 weeks. Restart the computer, I'll be back in 10mins to make sure it resolves the issue"
- "Ok"
*10mins later I return and have a puzzled look on my face*
- "Wait... you wanted me to restart right now?"
**I started to question how you've made it this far in life, or at the very least how you got your job**

I love when arrogant secretaries (they call themselves admins, but I know a goddamn secretary when I see one) have their hard drive fail at 8a.m. but they wait until 4:30 to report the issue. Then they proceed to demand that the issue get resolved before 5p.m. because they ABSOLUTELY need to send out an appointment to book a conference room for their boss (who is the most important senior director on the face of the earth, obviously). So now, assuming we have a spare hard drive available that already has a standard image installed on it, I have the task of attempting to recover all of the secretary's files they had saved to their local drive (why would anyone ever save business critical files to a network drive which gets backed up and is less likely to fail?).

Oh Yeah.. and what the hell has the secretary been doing all day? Obviously have not been working since all their job consists of is working in MS Office and sending out emails; so now I have a snotty secretary who hasn't done jack sh!t all day demanding I fix an issue they failed to report in any sort of timely fashion.

After awhile things like this start to jade you just a tad...

When I was doing that for a living I wasn't condescending, I was fucking rude. It use to piss me off when I'd build or upgrade a system for a customer and they'd mess it up and blame me or say the system was flawed. It got so that the company I worked for insisted that I stayed in the back and had zero contact with the customers. Hell I use to yell at my dear old Mother. The only people I hated more were other techies. Yeah right, like I care what the specs of your system are!!! Take a shower and go outside!! Then I discovered Lithium and everything changed for the better:thumbsup:;)

Lack of social skills and/or lack of patience.

All the IT guys at my company are awesome though. Something not working? Addressed within 30 minutes. Stupid users? Chuckle, smile, and tell them they remember when they were like that, regardless of it was true or not.

So, why do so many people go into the IT field if it is constant stress and annoyance. Do most IT people stick with it throughout their lives or do they burn out and do something else?

I can get by because I work for several smaller companies, who don't need and can't pony up for a full time IT tech.
They only call me when they are stuck, and are more self-sufficient than they would be, if I were "just down the hall".
