LOL, I didn't mean for this thread to have a "holier than thou" connotation.

It just intuitively seems to me that avid gamers would want a high quality monitor to bring out the best possible IQ from their games. Just like I would expect a professional photographer to be using a pro-grade monitor to bring out the colors of his photos and make Photoshop editing easier and more precise.

This is AnandTech after all, and I would imagine most people here have setups that are already far greater than the average person, with or without a high quality IPS monitor.

What do you want from games? 3D or 120FPS? Get a 120Hz monitor. If you want colour accuracy go with an IPS. If you just want cheap thrills because you blew all your money on the computer itself a shitty 22" TN panel for less then 150 bucks is fine.

Now look back down at your $1000 monitor, are you a graphic designer? Is it really that much better or are you just seeing the differences and the price tag and assuming that means it must be better.
Now look back up.
Now realise that $1000 covers the building cost of 90% of what you refer to as "gamers" entire systems including monitor.
Now look back up and have a little think about how much of a douchebag you are coming across as starting this thread.

At home I use an Acer 21.5" monitor that i bought at Target on an open box deal a few months ago. Works great.

At work I have a Dell 24" U2410 that my manager ordered for me last year and just realized it had IPS.

Hmmm I wonder if they would know if I swapped it with my Acer. 😛
 
To me it's in the same category as sound cards. Why would I spend $150 on a sound card and get no discernible advantage over on board sound?

I use a 28'' I-Inc LCD that I got for $140. My previous 22'' LG was $225 new, and nicer quality but I enjoy the size of the 28'' and notice absolutely no degradation in response time. Or maybe I just don't have the proper spider senses to tell the difference between 1-2ms.

24" IPS panels are cheap. A couple of years ago 22 and 24" *VA panels were ~$300. 22" eIPS panels are even cheaper. That's harder fail than Fabio Old Spice.
 
Love my dual NEC IPS monitors, wouldn't ever go back to TN. But, I don't really game either. Would love a 120Hz, LED backlit, IPS monitor.
 
I do a lot of graphics design and I wouldn't be caught dead with a TN monitor on my desktop for personal use. However, when gaming, image quality isn't the utmost concern. If you're playing a shooter, you don't have time to admire having at least 8-bits of color depth per channel. You're worried about not getting killed and not lagging. If there are more frames per second to be had in reducing in-game color depth from 32-bit to 16-bit, you do it. If you can track your next frag quicker from not having to adjust after image blur and ghosting fresh off a 180° flip of POV, you do what helps. Is there some characteristic inherent to being a gamer that makes one care about image quality? Not really.

I have to admit, most casual gamers dont care too much about their screens because all they really care about is the game. i play on a 17 inch piece of trash dell monitor so im used to it. i could careless if you have a 120 hz monitor, mines probably 60 hz, i dont have a dGPU, i use my onboard to play SC. XD

I agree with some that has been said here. The OP seems to be a VERY hard core gamer. I play... well... Minecraft. Yeah, dont need a fancy monitor for that. My monitor is easily 4 years old, no issues here.

id love a 27" high res monitor, but i get a long of bang for my buck having spent a quarter of that on 2 1080p monitors *Shrug* i think my rig cost about a grand when i built it, give or take. i couldnt double my budget to get a badass monitor

one day, when i have a good job and bills out of the way, ill want such a monitor, and an aeron chair
