Only the context thats currently being used with neo-conservative is new. The word neo-conservative dates back several decades, and was widely used in the 60s/70s.

And they are succeeding. Now people don't like being called "liberal." Of course if you ask them if they want Social Security, Medicare, Civil Rights, Public Health, College Financial Aid, and other Liberal programs or positions, they say yes. So they love to hate liberals, but don't you dare take away their liberal social programs. :D

Yuck, social programs.

That's another term that people like to hate, until it's their social programs getting cut.
I am sure if you conducted a poll should "social programs" be cut, a lot of people would say yes, but then if you ask them specifically, should we cut medicare, should we cut social security, should we cut public health, etc, the result would be very different.

Not throwing around the term, I just disagree with all of the above listed.

Well, you are entitled to that opinion, but what exactly would you do with seniors who rely on social security to live? Would you have them stand on the street and beg? Or have them choose between medical care and shelter? Do you want to not have a CDC to track infectious diseases?

Liberals hate being called liberals, so in a way it is like 'they' are asking for it. There really is not other deragoutery term for Republicans, so GOP-fans kind of have a leg up.

Then again on the flip side the left loves saying how Republicans want to kill your kids, take away grandma's social security and are racists.

Social security is a liberal social program. So if you are against liberal social programs, your are against social security, or you are not being honest with yourself.

When ever I hear a Republican politico who's running for office, or describing the ills of our country, I can always count down the seconds till I hear the word 'Liberal.' It usually pops up in the second or third sentence.

Living in Boston, it sort of reminds me of the VERY tired, hackneyed phrase "Yankees Suck, Yankees Suck, Yankees suck, that RedSox fans chant at games. Just like 'Yankees Suck,' Republicans saying 'Liberal' all the time is getting 'O so tired.

I'm surprised the hardcore Democrats in the USA haven't thought of a similar, compact word that connotes soo much to disparage republicans?

Get the lighters and matches out. Kindling is above.

because for republican, that's how they do their campaign. and because for democrats, that's not how they do it.

move this thread to the right place please.

None of the conservatives I know think like that. All of them wish we would get rid of SS, medicare and to some extent college financial aid. And don't BS about Civil Rights, that was a conservative driven issue back in the 60s.

Its the only multi-syllable word that the majority of the Republican populace even knows. That, and "commmie". I mean, its part and parcel of how republicans evangelically preach - they use labels for the notion of the "bad guy" as a way to get across the simplistic binary to the neanderthals they manipulate.
Marlboro Joe in Bumnutts, Texas, couldn't understand why he was getting poorer and poorer until the Republicans told him that it was "the liberals" fault. So now, Marlboro Joe feels sleeps a little easier (with a little help from a six-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon) knowing who's the "bad guy".

You know, the problem seems to be based in the fact that both parties think their way to do things is the only "right" way, and spend most of their time complaining about how awful the other side is.

If our elected officials spent half of the time trying to work thorugh the differences in opinion, reach compromises, and actually *gasp* get things done as they do villifying the other "side", imagine what could get done.

Too bad the current ultra partisan climate only seems to be getting more and more divisive and adversarial, true bipartisanship is all but gone, and less and less gets done. The real losers in this are the American people. Too bad we couldn't dump the all the elected officials, the current two party system, and all the money that is involved in running for office so we could just elect regular people who better represent the average american they are working for.

IMO. :)

This thread is a perfect example. Most of the posts are back and forth rebuttals from either side...

Look at any thread in P&N and you will have a perfect example. Hell it could be a thread about a cure for cancer and sure enough someone somewhere will poke in with a "Bush = Hitler!" or "Damn Commies!"

The problem is they don't have the answer, if you get rid of SS, what do you do about seniors who rely on SS for their livelyhood. It's easy to be against SS when you don't have to come up with good alternatives. I guess you can wish that all seniors are gonna make a lot of money in the stock market to not need SS or medicare, but you are always going to have winners and losers in the stock market, and the question is what do you do with the losers?

Right...but to what end? People are so worried about proving themselves right, and the other side wrong, that they almost forget what the topic was in the first place. IMO, this is nothing more than a tremendous waste of time.

This is why I disabled P&N. Why can't people respect that and not start political threads in OT? Non highly technical threads in HT get locked, but P&N threads in OT don't.
