Why do Republicans call the lifeline program Obamaphone?

Hugo Drax

Lifeline was enacted by Reagan, and Bush in 2005 made additional enhancements to the program.

It never makes sense to me. Is there any reason why they call it Obamaphone?

Because bashing the poors plays well. Even if you can make a good value proposition for giving the poor subsidized phones it still burns people who pay their own mobile bills (sometimes very large ones at that) to see a separate line item tax on their bill to pay for a phone for someone else when it's still considered somewhat of a luxury. Even if it's a low-quality phone akin to the "government cheese" people wouldn't take if offered to them they still resent "freeloading."

Because they think attaching Obama's name to anything makes it sound bad and unwelcome. Just like they think attaching "liberal" to anything does the same. Look up the word "liberal" in a thesaurus and then be prepared to thank them for the compliment every time they use the word as an insult.

^^^^ No way is it superior to "Bushbox". You should TM that shit.^^^^^

Given that they call the ACA "Obamacare"... I guess they like to add the term "Obama" to good policies that help the middle and working classes?

Bushbox is a great name/word...but for a different reason.

Because in 2008 the cost of the program was $819 million. In 2012, that figure had ballooned to $2.2 billion. Fill in the blank: The program was expanded immensely during the Presidency of _____________.

Fill in the blank and you'll know why it's referred to the way it is.

Truth: The Lifeline program was launched by President Reagan in 1984 and intended for landlines before cell phones were widely available to the public. In 2005, the program was amended by the Bush administration to allow for wireless plans. Then, in 2008, President Bush amended the program to allow households to decide between receiving the discount on wireless or landline service.

Hmm, wonder if that had anything to do with the cost increase??????

The Lifeline program pays $9.25/month to help people in poverty. When more people are in poverty, the cost goes up. When fewer people are in poverty, the cost goes down. The cause of the increase in poverty was the great recession. Also the Lifeline program was expanded in 2008 to add in cell phones. (A) The great recession and (B) the cellphone change to the Lifeline program were caused by policies during the Presidency of _____________.

Ouch

Yeah, but as far as I know, you can't fuck an Obamaphone (though I'm sure some have tried)
Dang, wish I had a clip of a certain Coupling episode.

"First time a guy ever phoned me".

"Oh come on, guys must call you all the time."

"No, Jeff, it was the first time a guy ever phoned me."

Shit, I always forget Obama is blameless. You'd think by now I'd know. With that in mind, there really isn't any sense in arguing about those dates, right?

But hey, since you seem to know a lot about the program. What was the cost for a land line versus the cost for a cell phone? Also, under the terms of the program, there is only one cell phone allowed per address. So the increase should pretty much shake out to the difference in cost between those two.

Maybe next we can talk about the increased numbers of those in poverty under the watch of Obama. We can correlate it with the increase in wealth of the 1% during that same time frame. I mean short of the phones and explosion in EBT costs, it doesn't seem like Obama has done a damned thing for the poor except increase their numbers. But hey, misery loves company, eh?

Let me guess though that's because of Bush?

Ahahahaha!!!! Look at him try and keep his bubble intact! I especially love how he attempts to deflect the topic at hand to one about poverty! Should we tell him what the cause in poverty was when Obama took office? Nah, let's not destroy the poor guys reality, he might kill himself...on second thought😛

Sshhh...no one tell boomerang how it's an independent, not-for-profit corporation designated by the FCC that is the administrator of universal service and has nothing to do with Obama.

We wouldn't want him to hurt himself as he contorts himself to fit his made up reality.

To be fair, Obamaphone is a far superior name to Reaganringer or Bushbox.

Obama deserves blame for a lot of things; he isn't a very good president. But this isn't one of those things that Obama should be blamed for.

You can't crash a car, have someone step in to try to rescue victims, and then blame the injuries on the rescuer (whether the rescuer is competent or not) for not rescuing fast enough. You have to face the fact that you crashed the car and that is the true cause of the injuries.

If you want to blame Obama for the crappy recovery, you first have to blame Bush for getting us into the mess. Otherwise you just look like a biased idiot.

Obama corrupts a lot of pre-existing programs, He was pimping phones and food stamps before 2012 election - like a crack dealer giving away free tastes. Oh there's "Obama Phone" alright and lots of prisoners on Dem plantation know about it

"While it’s true that President Obama didn’t launch the cell phone expansion of the Lifeline program, his policies have greatly increased the number of participants, since everyone in Food Stamp Nation qualifies for a free phone. The cost of the program has more than doubled, to $1.6 billion, since the cell phone benefit was added in 2008. It’s absolutely riddled with fraud and abuse, including individual recipients who scored multiple free telephones from the government. And it turns out that one of the biggest companies providing these welfare phones, TracFone Wireless, is run by big Obama donors...Somehow this particular program went from the debatable imperative to put telephones in the homes of the poor, to the utterly outrageous and easily abused dispensation of “free” cell phones to welfare recipients, with big money to be made by those with the political clout to cash in. And anyone who tries to put the brakes on that gravy train will have 7 million “Obama Phone” holders lined up to vote against him."
