Why do readers of technology related websites/blogs tend to be a bit liberal?

Go to Slashdot, Digg, Kuro5hin, and even this forum, you will find more people leaning towards liberal ideals, than conservative ones. Any reason for that, given the face that all these websites are technology related?

Just look at Digg and Slashdot. Any thing related to the govt or rights, brings out the liberals. But I bet if you went to a car website, there would be a mix of opinions.

Flamebait? P&N is that way.

Technology is inherently progressive - as is science.

I wouldn't use the term "liberal" since that is a baited and politically charged word that doesn't really mean anything but I do agree with you that people on tech. sites tend to be more open to new theories, ideas, and change.

Also since science and technology help to solve and create new problems most people involved or interested in said fields are aware of the problems of the world and have opinions on said problems.

Let's hope this thread doesn't bring out the other side of tech forums with snide remarks from liberals, conservatives, progressives, libertarians, or anyone!

Aye...

I think it's more about libertarianism. The readers seem to have strong social or economic (or combinations of the two) beliefs.

probably because they tend to be well-versed in the existence of issues in these fields...like a spark for the curious mind (they are usually in the presence of many more resources on such issues than the average person), if they are the curious and/or opinionated type.

If being anti-war means you get called a liberal, then most of America is "liberal". I agree that there is a large libertarian streak on this and other tech websites though. This is related to why you find a disproportionately large amount of atheists here; there is a strong connection between libertarianism and atheism.

I keep up with Digg and it has been going in a downward spiral with "Ron Paul for President" and "Linux is uber beating M$ into bankruptcy" for a while now.

A lot of the visitors are younger folks that love to talk about embracing change and doing anything that they feel sets them apart from the rest of the population. Being liberal is at the stem of it, because being conservative is held as the more traditional way of doing things.

I don't know if my reasoning is the best, but I definitely think that age is a big factor.

I'll take it a step further & say that tech-related forums attract mainly intelligent people.

It also attracts people who aren't smart, but want to think they are.

Technical people tends to be analytical and free thinkers whereas conservatives tends to follow a predetermine path. imho
