I asked my friend this once... I think it had somethign to do with packing the tobacco into the wrapper or something.

so the tobacco in the cigarrettes is packed down towards the filter.
usually results in a smoother smoke, think it stays fresher longer too (maybe that's just me)

Theoretically it compresses the tobacco. I did it when I was a smoker, and to me it was just one more fun ritual associated with smoking.

Part of making it hard to quit are all the little rituals that you do. A friend of mine pretty much quit smoking, but when he drinks he has to have a smoke. Not really for a nic fix, but because he's not comfortable without it.

partly it's force of habit, but mostly it's to pack more of the tobacco into the cigs.
this is especially important with parliament lights. :)

There have been and continue to be a number of studies regarding the alcohol/nicotine relationship

People who smoke and try to quit drinking have a more difficult time not relapsing, because new scientific evidence indicates that nicotine may actually cause a craving for alcohol.

All that's really known is that they work in conjunction with each other people who drink like to smoke and people who smoke like to drink...

This mostly an anachronism that had more actual utility back in the pre-filter days. Modern cigarettes are packed just fine.

Back in the day, before filter cigarettes, it made more sense to tap your smoke down on the end you were then gonna put in your mouth.

In those days, there were but five or so brands in the entire universe: Pall Mall, Lucky Strike, Camel, Chesterfield, and Old Gold.

Also, matches and lighters hadn't been invented yet, and you had to have two sticks handy, and a lot of patience.

To make it seem like they still have any restraint and can wait a few seconds longer before needing to stuff a cigarette in their mouth again :p

It packs the tobacco tighter, allowing less air to pass through the cigarette when dragged-on, thus getting more smoke (and nicotine, tar, carcinogens, etc.). It can also help the tobacco burn more slowly and uniform, since it effectively reduces the air spaces in the tobacco.

buy a pack of smokers, open it and look at the end (where you can see the tobacco). Then put it back in, and hit the top against your hand a few times then take that same cig out and look at the end. You will see the tobacco settled usually about 1/4 down.

Thats it exactly. With non filters, if you dont pack them, you get alot of tobacco in your mouth, but if you pack it, then the end that is packed wont get tobacco in your mouth. Everyone who does it with filtered smokes does it cause they have no idea why their doing it, and they think their supposed to, although it makes very little difference.

I do it because when I smoke in the car the wind doesn't blow the ash around as bad...even a single unpacked cig with an open window is a big mess.
