Why do people write checks at the store?

Yesterday, I'm in line at this store and the express lane opens up so I rush over there to get behind this lady who ends up writing a check for her stuff. Takes a long time for her to finish the transaction and everyone on the line probably got annoyed.

So my question is, why do people still write checks? I am sure every bank has debit/credit cards nowdays. If they want to keep track, can't they just go online and view their transactions? Someone explain. I just don't see any advantges/conveniences of writing a check.

They have every right to....for whatever reason they decided to keep using checks, so shut up about it.

I agree; I don't see any reason to use checks for purchasing items in stores. Technology-phobia?

Wait, so if someone doesn't adjust to your own habits, they're immediately wrong?

If I remember correctly, when was the last time you used a check, or witnessed someone using a check that did not get asked for ID? Basically, they always get asked for ID, and perhaps that sense of security is what they are after.

Yes, Visa and banks and the like iwll restore stolen funds to even a debit account these days, but still, why take the risk of having to deal with it and having to wait?

Perhaps you or I are willing to do so without a second thought, but what about someone who suffers from anxiety attacks, or someone whol likes to keep maticulous hard-copy records from the getgo.

Just because they're different does not mean that they are wrong.

And stop being so bitchy; it makes you look fat.

What really holds up the line is when some women with huge purses unpack on the counter like they are setting up camp or something, finally find their credit card (do they really go through this ordeal every time they buy anything?) and then finally when they've climbed the mountain and finish the transaction, every one else sits there a little akwardly (cashier and the woman with the big purse included) while she begins the process of moving basecamp to her next purchase counter.

All about the losers in life floating a balance to buy bon-bons and pabst and then complain how bounced check fees are unfair.

No... you really don't have the right to shoot someone in the head... which is exactly why you'd go to jail for it, asshat. Ability != Right, douche. "So shut up "

As for the topic:
SO SORRY YOU ARE SO IMPORTANT AND CAN'T WAIT 30 SECONDS FOR SOMEONE TO WRITE A CHECK. Get over it. The world doesn't care.

Really just an extra minute? Every check writer I see now waits until the whole order is done (even with my check card, I have already swiped and pinned in...just waiting to hit YES and CASHBACK if I need some).

Now the clerk gives the total, which is always clearly visible as well. This usually has to be repeated at least once. (maybe they are illiterate too? I don't know).

Then they have to hunt for their checkbook..sometimes taking out half their fvking purse...with a guy they end up checking each pocket twice to realize it's in their breastpocket....(WORST IS WHEN YOU GET "Sorry we don't accept checks...then deadbeat buyer without any other method to pay claims he is American Royalty and he will have them fired).

'Now what's the total again?', 'Who do I make it payable too?' 'Who?' 'do you have a stamp?' 'no?, ok who do I make it out too?' 'Can you spell that? W I N N D I X I E, P U B L I X, K R O G E R S, etc' 'one more time?'....'ok what was the total?' 'one sec my phone, hey I gotz to call ya back getting groceries, holla at me lata'....'sorry, what was the total again?'

Now, chances are the next thing is: 'We need your drivers license, please'...used to be the way I remember it was, you only needed a check card for cash back....seems like they all need ID now.

Now you get "Well it's printed/already written on the check"....'sorry, we have to verify it?' "WHAT!?!?! Do I LOOK like a criminal? Do you know who I am?" [YES WE ALL DO SIR, A DEADBEAT WITHOUT $50 IN HIS ACCOUNT UNTIL PAYDAY TRYING TO FLOAT A BALANCE TO BUY BEER AND PORK RINDS]...'oh ok let me FIND it.'

Now proceed to wait again and hear usually 'oh that's not it, wait, no...not it....hmmmm I forgot I had this in there, ahh look at this picture, anyone want gum?... ahh my license...ahh no, here it is!'

This is why many here hate a typical checkwriter. Even before check cards, you had those like me with my check made out except for the total, my DL out (or check writing card), and just waiting for the numbers to write in, and have the clerk write down my license. Get my receipt, license/check card, cash back and be on my way.

Now I use checks only for my car payment and to pay personal invoices at work....never in a retail store really anymore....prior some car and boat stores did not take credit/debit so for large purchases a check was the way to do it....now it seems everyone retail takes plastic.

no just small people that hold me up. It's not like I am pulling my hair out mad, but when you live in a place where there is a decent population and it takes an extra half hour to get through the 'express' line that you should have been through in 5-10 mins....sort of makes you lose a bit of your own life there. In 30 mins I could have my oil changed, some lures ready to go, my tires rotated, my teeth cleaned, etc. Instead I spend it in a freaking line over some peons.

Don't get me started on the idiots that can't speak english that want to argue how milk was $0.25 cheaper last week while at the checkout. Usually writing a check too.

Actually aren't "Express Lines" for Cash and Debit cards only?

BTW, it would take me about as long to write a check as it would to use a debit card though I never write checks except to pay bills myself.
