Why do people try to hate on Artificial Flavor/Color?

Seriously, I'd make this crystal lite stuff and drink it if they'd nix the unnecessary coloring.

They taste bad, and look funny.

Edit:
Imagine giving someone a bag of lollipops who has only had real fruit their whole lives, and asking them to identify the flavors. I bet they wouldn't get a single one right.

I was, literally, very disappointed upon reaching adulthood & discovering that fruit did not, in fact, taste like Skittles or Starbursts made them out to taste like. I still have a hard time just eating strawberries because they never taste as good as my sugar-filled memory of them wants them to taste

Artificial flavors are a coward's way out. I didn't fully understand this until I started making a lot of cocktails. Juicing a lemon or lime is just as easy as opening a bottle of sour mix and tastes a million times better. Making real grenadine from actual pomegranates is easy as pie (actually, easier) and will make you want to hunt down the people who make Rose's and choke them to death with a bag of pomegranate seeds (their dying words: "What the hell ARE these things?"). Artificial flavors just taste like shit.

Artificial colors I'm cool with. I like my bacon to glow in the dark.

I don't know where you grew up so forgive me if it's a cultural thing, but wtf? bad parents if you never had fruit as a child.

This is one of the biggest stark taste differences between natural and artificial in food. Fake maple isn't even in the same ballpark as natural maple.

It's inedible. You don't realize how bad it is until you've had maple for awhile, and go back. I like corn syrup(dark) occasionally as a low cost pancake topper, and will sometimes mix light corn syrup and molasses, but real maple is still king.

I avoid the 2 title potential toxins at all costs. I have seen some products that actually tout artificial flavor in bold print on the front of the bag (AYKM ??). I find it hilarious when I see people yacking on the cell phone while loading the cart with potentially carcinogenic "food".
TheVrolok -- Good stuff, also Agave nectar is a good substitute for the liquid sugar/preservative/color laden fluids.

I thought artificial flavor is just a fancy term for MSG.

Or is that Natural Flavor?

I also heard that artificial strawberry flavor is exactly the same as Almond flavoring.

After a while it just sucks ass.

Its good for things like Saltwater Taffy. But bad for juice and real food and chocolate.

Yeah, I grew up on the fake stuff. Then I moved to New England & tried real maple syrup, which is made & sold all over the place. It took me awhile to get used to the flavor since it was so different, but I won't touch the fake stuff now because it's not "maple syrup" anymore

It's part of the "natural is always better" mindset that is pervasive today. Generally it's a good rule of thumb, but some people use it in place of actually thinking about anything for themselves.

Natural & artificial flavorings are pretty similar, although they say that artificial flavorings are better for you:

I have to be careful with natural flavorings because they can contain animal products, including milk (I have a dairy allergy). Companies rarely divulge the cocktail of ingredients they use for natural flavor, it could be soylent green for all we know. Here's some fun reading for you:

Same thing happened to me. It was certainly an awakening when I had the real stuff.

Same thing with vegetables. I've been hitting up every local farm stand I can after getting a taste of "real" vegetables...the stuff in the grocery store doesn't hold a candle to them, especially tomatoes!

The nice thing about Mrs. Butterworths is that there's actually no butter in it...great for us dairy-allergics ;)
