why do people pay retail?

Depends for me. If it's a fairly large purchase (>$500) then I will.

I don't really haggle though. Let's say item X is selling retail for $999.99. I will walk in with $950 in cash and say: "I want that. Here's 950 bucks cash. It's yours if you let me leave with that right now." I show them the $950 in the wallet and not a dime more. If they take it, I leave with no money on me and a new item X. If they don't, I just tell them that's all I got and I'll try over at the next store down the road... 🙂

Considering sales tax here is 14.5% I get a pretty good deal most times.

rudeguy is right, CC now is firing managers/store director who cut a deal on pretty much anything periodically. I mean, if it's his only deal for the month he'll be fine, but if it's his sixth or seventh, he better start looking for a different job. Two sales manager and a store director at my area was fired last month because of this issue. Are they hard to be replaced? No .. replacement for them are easy to find according to my DM.
