if its over 100 bucks I'm hagglin.

No coupon, no PM. "here's what I'll pay, do you want my money?"

usually get 10-20% off.

but still people just go in and drop their hard earned money without even thinking about getting a deal

I know a girl who walked into a dealership and straight out said "I want a car and I'll pay the sticker price". She didn't even try to negotiate! She didn't want the hassle, and she knew she was doing something stupid because she didn't tell anyone where she was going until she got back. I think she ended up paying around 19k for a Ford Focus Hatchback.

not always...ask the clerk at BB or CC for a deal and wait for the empty stare
The clerks at these big chains are some young kid getting paid dick wages to stand there and sell stuff.
You think they care about cutting you a deal?

Buyers ego. 😉

The first line, saw the problem coming:

"I know a girl who walked into a dealership"

Everything is negotiable. Even the "non-negotiable" prices are BS.

Because the clerks don't have any power to lower prices - managers do.

It's more convenient. Why the fvck do I want to wait 3-5 days for some toiletries or some movies I ordered off some website to save $2.50 when I can get it now for a little bit more money? Certain items, yes of course I try to use a coupon or something. (Especially having no job at the moment) But most any item below a certain price level isn't worth the stupid hassle

ehh....I beg to differ. The managers dont have much power at all. I know a manager at a local CC that got fired for saving a guy $100 off a $2500 big screen.

And no, I dont try to bargain on toiletries...however columbia house has great deals on movies....last time I ordered I got 6 dvd's for about 20 bucks.

How long have you worked retail? How many of your buddies work retail? I've done it for 3.5 years and the managers have a lot more power than you would think. I don't know what that manager at CC did but if they got fired for a $100 discount then that's some $hitty policy at CC. (Of course, you can see why CC is going down the drain and BB is profiting off of it)

How much was shipping on those DVD's? Didn't you also have to buy one at the regular price or some crap like that? I don't watch movies that much and last time I checked, Columbia only has certain ones you can pick from (or was that BMG)

1. next month it will be 9 years
2. most of them
3. shipping was included
4. that included the one I had to buy

CC is going down the drain in a hurry...they just let their top 1600 salespeople go because they were making too much money. I know this because 2 of them work for us now. BB will pricematch, but if you just go in there and ask for a deal, they will laugh at you

I call BS on the "manager got fired for offering 100 dollar discount"

I've been a avid shopper of AV gear for over 15 years. 10% is nothing, 20% is good. You have no idea the markup on consumer electronics.

I've also got a 10+ year relationship with my local Hi-fi dealer. He shows me his inventory/billing sheet and says "just give me 6 points and we're both happy".

That equals 25-40% off retail. I got my 4500 dollar speaker for 3000 bucks for the pair. That's a deal

you can call BS...but its true

I have a great idea of what the markup is (gross margin) on electronics, because I get paid off the profit. You sound like you have great deal going with your local retailer, its always best to have a friend in the business

I refuse to pay retail for anything. I think this comes from working in sales for so long now. The only thing I can't seem to get a deal on is groceries. What about you guys, are you someone who is willing to just lay down and pay whatever they tell you, or are you a ferengi?

Refuse to pay retail, but you pay retail for groceries? Groceries are wayyyyyyyy overpriced.

You obviously don't look so hard for grocery forums.

hey, if its true then that must be a specialized case.

I also negotiate multi-million dollar deals for my company.

Price is ALWAYS NEGOTIABLE. 🙂

The question always remains - "Do you want to make a sale? Do you want my money?"

I hate it when customers ask those questions

just tell them that you are ready to buy, and want a deal

reject their first 3 offers

illl do that if im gonn save a ton of money but ill just pay 5$ extra and save myself a headache
Who the hell are you?

Depends on what I am buying. I wait for coupons and rebates for electronics and big sales for clothes. Other than that I don't really shop around that much.

The reason why people go to stores like Best Buy and Circuit City is because it's easier to return things or deal with a bigger company. You know they won't be going bankrupt soon. Plus they have good extended warranty plans.

No kidding.
I watched a guy in office Max buy a fairly cheap inkjet printer and a $30 USB printer cable.
What are they at Newegg, like $5?

One thing I never pay retail for is clothes. If I see something I like at the Banana Republic or J-Crew, I come back in a few weeks and buy it for for 70% off.
