Why do people pay for music when they can get it legitimately for free?

I disagree. There are a lot of bands that are better live and some that are better in the studio.

Phish and String Cheese are two great examples of bands that are better live.

i saw string cheese a couple of years ago
their live stuff *is* better
same goes for keller williams, and the flecktones. but i like that stuff, and etree has been a favorite site of mine for a while now.

though it is true, some live recordings *suck*, and i dont keep all of what i download because some of it really is awful quality

The best bands generally are live bands-Phish, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones specifically. I have 100s of live shows. Live phish are generally very good quality.. same with bela fleck.

i *so* want to see the flecktones again

its worth gettin something by the bela fleck trio, if you havent got any. some great stuff and they cover some flecktones tunes

Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, all extremely popular artists that were shoved down our throats but I still think make great music. There are more examples but I tried to list only ones that I thought would have more of a universal appeal.

I agree with the exception of Pearl Jam. Very well put and I have to admit ... I can't get free live soundgarden tunes. Atleast not htat I know of. Whata band!

It's funny ... seems like half the people that have DLed free live music get it. Atleast they understand that alot of good free music is out there in addition to what they buy.

Others that have not even considered it have gone off the deep end. Interesting... I guess it's that whole ignorance is bliss thing.

I think it's more because you make it sound as if all you listen to is free music and anyone who paid for music is a douche. At least, that's what it comes off as to me anyway.

I just don't listen to much music. I'm aware that independent labels do exist and produce good bands, but since I don't listen enough all my favorite bands still sound fresh to me. When I was into music I'd get all sorts of crazy stuff, from R.L. Burnside to Primus. These days I stick with the stuff I know because the 10 minutes per week I do listen to music I am not trying to experiment.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Half of the people who have downloaded free live music get "it".

Do you have any numbers as to what percentage of the population has downloaded free live music? The total, not the number that get "it". You've made it clear with your undeniable facts that half the people that have downloaded free live music don't get "it".

I'm just curious as to the percentage of people who have downloaded so that i can then figure out how many people in the world are ignorant.

OK ...requesting mods lock this. To many people that havn't even bothered researching what bands allow free live downloads are busy ranting. Kinda pointless. Most don't even realize that the bands they love might actually have even more material they would love equally avaialble for free download.

I get some music from archive.org, but there are lots of artists I like that don't give their recordings away for free, and lots of artists that sound much better in the studio. I'll buy their music.
