Why do people listen to rap?

Maybe it's just me, but rap "music" really doesn't really sound like music at all. It just sounds like lots and lots of bass with dumb lyrics about drugs/hoes/money. Is it a cultural thing to like/dislike rap? I'd be willing to listen to what people consider "good" rap before I make a complete judgment on the genre.

For the record, I'm fine with pretty much any other kind of music, including country. I might not like it as much as other genres, but it's not nearly as grating to me as rap.

Why do you listen to whatever shit YOU listen to? I'm sure most rap fans don't consider to "be music" eiher.

There is no "formula" that defines what music is, music is whatever sounds good to you.

Rap is a bastardization of hip-hop and house music.
Be thankful that it's not as gangster as it was in the 90s where it influenced many shootings, including of big rappers. Now it's just thug and shit.
I can handle true hip-hop and its ilk, but not the mainstream thug street-culture shit that all seem to breed dance moves popular at college parties.

I stand as a rock person though. Rock of all ages, of all variety. Just based on my mood and energy level and/or desired energy level.

ps, I think you have bigger problems, such as learning how to use the search function, because this discussion has happened many times already.

Some of it is good, most of it is the same old derivative, unimaginative shit. And yes, this applies to all genres of music.

And I don't even listen to rap. (I'm not defending the genre; I just think it's remarkably short-sighted to dismiss an entire genre of music as trash)

Pretty much every topic other than current events is a repost. Your point?

If you don't like it, you don't like it. There's no need to waste time to convince you otherwise. What's there to discuss?

Every genre of music has it's bad and good.

Rap music is no different. If all you are listening to is the hip hop music on top 40, then you are barely ever going to find anything worth your time.

Do you find that a majority of the artists and songs that you like are played on the radio? If not, then you have to ask yourself why you would expect it to be any different with rap music.

Rap seems to embody a lot of things, and has a rich history that ties in deeply with American urban culture, breaking, MCing, jamaican sound systems, detroit techno, jazz, and alot of other things. Rap is as integral to American culture as Country Western Music, Post-Modern Classical (Aaron Copland, Gershwin), and Jazz.

A friend of mine said rap is more of an art form. I suppose I can see where he is coming from, with the rhyming and whatnot.

However, I just like it because I think that there are a lot of good rap artists out there that do put thought into how their records are made. The beats are really catchy and/or thoughtful, and the lyrics are bananas. Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco are amazing lyricists, and I really enjoy listening to them put together words and phrases never thought possible before.
