Shouldn't you be paying complete attention to the road...I can't think of a single objective reason why ANYONE should or would want to drive a manual instead of an automatic

Control.

If I want to rev to redline, I can do it. If I want to change gears at 1000 RPM, I can do that too.

There is no reason to not like a manual trans, except if you are fat and lazy.

They are cheaper to buy
More reliable (less to go wrong)
They put more power to the ground
Are more fun to drive
Give you more control
In most cases, better on fuel

What is so good about slushbox?

Why does this make you happy?

I'm mad when a car isn't available in manual, but couldn't care less if it's also offered in auto

For the kind of car I have no (luxobarge), a manual makes no sense and the auto does just fine.

If I were ever to buy a sports car or truck, it'd have to be a stickshift.

My auto is 300HP V8. That's pretty powerful. Though it is a heavy Cadillac. It's a 97 Seville STS, which is the sportier model (as opposed to the Seville SLS). Would you consider this to not be a powerful auto because it's a luxury make? Or is 300HP not powerful? Over 300HP is not what most will be driving.

I've driven a lot of cars in my years, and the manuals have always had better response and control. This was mainly 80's and 90's though. Haven't had the opportunity to drive too many 2000+ models. Maybe automatics have significantly improved in the last 5 to 10 years? I doubt it though.

I like my Seville STS, but I'll probably replace it soon with something that has a manual transmission. I just miss it too much.

You've obviously never even driven a manual.

The only times I've ever lost track of my speed are when I'm 'going with traffic' and not paying any attention to the gauges. Suddenly, I'll snap back and realize that I, and every other car on the road, are cruising at 20 over the posted speed limit.

Edit - And to say something really inflammatory, I'll add this statement. People who drive manuals because of the 'control' are delusional. As others have said, many autos give the same response and control, as well as equal and often superior mileage, performance, etc. I can accept the 'more fun' argument, people get their jollies in many different ways.

Those autos your describe are few and far between, and more expensive than most can afford.

It's more fun because you're in control. You can do exactly what you want with no hesitation, with no blasted machine thinking for you. I'm certainly not delusional about it.

Many people mentioned control, fun-factor and better awareness. I'll reiterate what only a few have said: better reliability/durability and lower overall cost of ownership.

These cars are like space ships. They don't need to downshift to pass, there is no lag or hesitation. There is no "appropriate" gear. Every gear will blow your pants off.

As someone who has logged over 4,000 miles in a 469 HP E55 and 2,000 miles in an SL600, I think I qualify as one who has driven a truly powerful auto tranny car or two. And I still prefer manuals. These are both exceedingly fast cars, yet when caught in the wrong gear they STILL have sluggish acceleration. I don't know how many times I'd be in the E55 doing 30-40, stomp on the gas, and have it simply not downshift even after hitting the floorboards. And so the car would only accelerate moderately fast instead of insanely fast. Engaging the sport shift mode and shifting via the steering wheel buttons helped a little. Is it fast enough to pass without downshifting? Yes. Is it fast as you expect it to be? No. Because the downshift may or may not happen. Personally, I want the performance I seek to be on tap every time I request it, not just occasionally. These ARE awesome cars, to be fair. And it's not really my place to complain since these are my dad's cars and not mine... and he's getting old and can't operate a clutch pedal that well anymore so he requires automatics, but if I ever find myself able to afford the cars he can... they won't be autos.

On normal cars with lower torque, I suppose a DSG trans (VW, Audi, etc.) would work better.

Edit-I can't understand Americans interest in manuals. In asia (and europe), everyone drives a manual. We look forward to not having to shift.

You say that, but driving a manual hardly needs you're full attention, it comes naturally...

Its like learning to ride a bike, at first it requires alot of concentration, then it requires none after practice...

And if you want to look at it from an environmental point of view, yea it saves 1 or 2 miles per gallon of petrol, but if every car was an automatic how many extra gallons are you going to burn compared to where every car was automatic... It all adds up..

Actually, one could say you're paying more attention than with an automatic because your hands are tied up with actually driving the car rather than fiddling with the radio, eating, or putting on makeup etc.

I think a manual makes you pay attention more. When you just sit back and the car does all the driving, you feel distanced and more relaxed. Similarly, I have a manual bike which is a handful (150HP, 200kg). Youls literally cannot stop concentrating on keeping the bike safe. Then I had to move a friend's twist and go (automatic) scooter. It's so slow and requires no brain to ride it, that you become lathargic on the road and can get yourself in trouble because of it.

Plus manuals allow you to use a car/bike properly. I've not driven many auto cars, but hate the feeling of it. Auto sports cars make me feel ill, it's like having an F1 car with cruise control.

It is like an epenis around here.

I have one because the used car I bought happened to have one. I don't mind either.

They are more fun than an auto but if you live in a high traffic area with a lot of stop n go
or gridlock it gets tiresome. Besides, between drinking coffee, eating snacks, adjusting my
stereo, smoking I'm already multitasking enough...

You only get better mileage with a manual transmission if you are driving it in such a way that you are trying to get better mileage. From most of the descriptions of why people prefer a manual transmission I have seen here they aren't about getting better mileage.
Now, as someone who has owned four manual transmission vehicles and one automatic, (I currently drive a manual) I sure do miss that automatic when I am sitting in traffic.

I can't believe that you think driving a manual transmission takes attention away from the actual driving. hahahahahah. It's just the opposite, n00b.

For my daily commute, I get great mileage, since the car pretty much never sees 3000rpm. :p

However, if on the way home on Friday, I happen to take the winding two-lane back road, I'll get a little worse mileage - because the car will never see 3000rpm from the other side of the line. :D

I don't see the point of a manual car either. I don't want to have to worry about shifting and things. I just sit back, use one hand, and drive. Let the car shift on its own. That's what they are programmed to do.

Now that being said, I would love to have a car where you can just press a button to shift and override the automatic settings every so often. I know a Grand Prix had this feature and others do too. I think that's the best of both worlds because sometimes I wish my car would shift a bit sooner than it does.

Most race cars are manual transmission. Don't you think if there was an advantage to having a slushbox in a racing car that they'd have them?

You can't or haven't driven a manual transmission car have you? If you like performance cars then I would try one...it takes a little bit of practice but it's a skill worth having.

A slushbox would make that car slower. It's a lightweight car but it isn't a torque monster so the 6 speed close ratio gearbox really takes advantage of the powerband of the engine (power really comes on between 6,000rpms and the 8,000rpm redline). It would be a shame to fit the Lotus Elise or the Exige with an automatic.

Besides, those cars would instantly have to be excluded from my search for a good low mileage used model.
