what's the big F'in deal? So you save a mile or two per gallon on gas. Most people here that can afford a nice car with a manual don't need to worry about money. And automatic transmissions are so advanced now that you barely get any extra gas mileage out of them. I know some people think they're funner....but why? You move a stick a few times on a car ride and that makes it funner? Shouldn't you be paying complete attention to the road...I can't think of a single objective reason why ANYONE should or would want to drive a manual instead of an automatic

You say that, but driving a manual hardly needs you're full attention, it comes naturally...

Its like learning to ride a bike, at first it requires alot of concentration, then it requires none after practice...

And if you want to look at it from an environmental point of view, yea it saves 1 or 2 miles per gallon of petrol, but if every car was an automatic how many extra gallons are you going to burn compared to where every car was automatic... It all adds up..

I would argue that driving stick makes you a more alert and better driver. When driving an automatic its a put your foot down and go experience, pretty zombifying if you ask me. When driving stick you need to be more awake and in control of the car, and if you screw up you are greeted with that wonderful grinding gears noise. Also you become a lot more alert as to what speed you are going since you will be able to say, "hey I'm in third gear the engine is roughly this loud I must be going about 40", without diverting attention from the road. You are better connected to the car and gives you more control.

I think everyone should be required to learn how to drive stick. My bmw 540i is a stick, I don't regret it ever, nothing like down shifting to 4th while going 80 and quickly flying up to 100.

How can you like an automatic? You don't have any control over acceleration, you have very little feel for the car and you can't get going when you want to! With a manual, if I want to get going I drop the transmission into a lower gear an instantly get going. In an automatic tranny, its takes a second (or more) to downshift.

Also you become a lot more alert as to what speed you are going as you will know hey I'm in third gear the engine is roughly this loud I must be going about 40.

In my car, I can tell you approximatly how fast I'm going w/o speedometer. Just give me the gear and the tach. On a related note...I can not believe how small the tachs are in the new imports...........

One of your arguments against is to pay more attention to the road/driving. You are more involved in the driving process with manual, and I would argue more aware of the road/your surroundings.

You have more control of the car and are more in tune with the car when driving a manual transmission car. In short, it's more rewarding.

I think a manual requires you to pay more attention to driving than an automatic, not less. It's not as easy to do other things while you're driving if you need both hands and both feet to drive.

Shouldn't you be paying complete attention to the road...

I don't agree with that, the majority of people who have driven manuals for a while can agree to this easily.

Why do I?
1) I was given the car as hand me down and I'm not really in a situation to be spending money on new cars, no complaints at all with what I'm being given, especially since insurance comes to around $50/month for comprehensive when factoring in that I'm only 19.
2) I enjoy it more, I've test driven dozens of cars and other than one exception, I'd say I always prefer the manual versions of the cars.
3) A lot of times the automatic will be a 4 speed, while manual would be a 5 speed... better gearing. Even if you don't see any advantage in gas mileage or daily driving, I prefer shorter gears for driving in and around the city.
4) I like it, I get bored in an automatic and while I can switch well between them, I occasionally find myself slamming the dead pedal in hopes of a clutch.

If I were to ever fall asleep in either car, it would be an automatic.

I am not saying anything about gas mileage, reliability, etc. in comparison between the two. The simple fact is that I like it because of one or two reasons and I am naturally much more attentive in a manual transmission.

If driving my 93 Aerostar minivan i wouldn't want anything but an automatic. If however, i was driving my 70 1/2 Z28 with a very healthy solid-liftered,headered small block i wouldn't have anything but a 4-speed or better yet a 5-speed. Nothing feels like a properly shifted stick. For me it is the feel.

manual FTW. 5 spd in my truck, sometimes i hate it when im trying to talk on the phone and etc, but i kinda like that factor so i minimize talking & driving.

much funner, more control, better accell (in downshifting esP) etcc

True. But you might be greeted with either no power (too high of a gear) or your engine starts going at 12k rpm (too low of a gear).

I remember once, when I was learning, I was trying to go into 5th from fourth at a high RPM but I accidently went into third. My car lurched forward and my engine started going really really fast. Needless to say I pushed the clutch in really fast. No harm was done, I was just scared.

But to the point of the OP....
when I drive a stick I am constantly aware of my cars capabilities. If I need more power, I downshift... if I want less (ie, starting on some snow) I keep it in a higher gear. This has helped me a lot driving my little integra in Utah.
