Yeah, for some reason since the pandemic my normal grocery store has had a very limited supply of blueberries and honeydews, which are weekly staples here.

That sucks ... I love blueberries in particular.

Having said that I really didn't have trouble getting fresh fruit at any point although there were issues with nearly everything else!

Went shopping 2 days ago and the fresh produce section of Stop & Shop (Northeast US grocery chain) was stuffed to the gills for late winter.

No freaking vanilla Haagen-Daz though damnit! :D

Yeah, I don't get it, blueberries, honeydew and pineapples. They always used to have a ton, now either none or really crappy ones. Everything else they always have good stock of at good prices.

Almost a month ago I did my ~2x/month Costco run and going through checkout a woman employee approaches me and says their system (after my card was scanned) flagged me for it being advantageous for me by virtue of my typical usage to upgrade to an Executive Membership and she and the cashier briefed me on the reason why. I wasn't clear but their sincerity convinced me and I said "OK." I did ask if they could provide me with some documentation and she went and got me a pamphlet. I inquired a couple days ago when I returned, at Membership Services and it was explained to me. Basically, I get an additional 2% in addition to annual 3% credit certificate on qualifying Costco purchases (warehouse and online). That doesn't include gasoline, and I guess some other stuff. The cost of an Executive Membership is $120/year, whereas my "regular" membership was $60/year. I did a quick mental calculation and figure I will benefit maybe around $40/year at my approximate usage. So, I guess I'll keep it (they said I could cancel the EM anytime).

If you're open to the credit card, that adds a few more percent on top.

I pretty much use my Costco card only for Costco and gas purchases and get back a out $500 between the CC and my executive membership.

I mainly use Costco for gas.
I don't spend enough to exceed the price of the executive membership

The return policy, and buying in bulk would be my guess.

Costco has deals, and is a good option for groceries and essentials. I've ordered some items that were exceptional deals, like a 65" HiSense 4K TV and a Denon 7.2 Ch. 75W 8K AV Receiver with HEOS® Built-in for at least $100+ less than I've seen anywhere.

However, Sam's is my #1 for food. Costco beef comes from who knows where, Sam's beef is US sourced only.

I use my Citi Costco card for travel and restaurants in addition to Costco purchases. For travel and restaurants it returns 3%. Do you have a CC that does better?

If I shopped gas away from Costco's pumps I'd use it for that, but I almost always gas-up at Costco.

100% keep the Executive Membership. Use the card to get gas at Costco (if it's near you). We MAKE $300 or so a year just from doing that, and it pays for our membership + free stuff.

Costco has their own mean processing plant and they mostly use US beef. They also have strict standards and their meat tends to be a bit higher quality than Sam's.

A rule of thumb between the two:

Sam's Club is good for bulk cost saving purchases.

Costco is good for higher end and unique items.

I thought gas purchase doesn't count?

We have a "steak night" one night a week at our house. We cook our steaks in an air fryer and then reverse sear them on a grill pan. Works perfectly every time, and they are delicious. We get all our steaks at Costco, either fillet or NY strip. They are excellent, always tender, no gristle, and well marbled. They are actually much higher quality than you often get at a chain restaurant like Outback.

My chase cards in tandem with discover rotating usually do better. I try to focus my spend for chase UR points although their pay yourself back was just scaled back. With United devaluing as well I'm starting to wonder if I should move to Amex and Delta.

I can't decode your message there. I do have a Chase Freedom CC with rotating quarterly categories for 5% back, but I haven't seen them honoring restaurants or qualifying travel. Right now, until June 30 it honors Amazon.com and Lowes. I'm not near a Lowes but my recent business with Amazon is with my Chase Freedom card for 5% cash back. My Discover CC is providing 5% cash back until June 30 on restaurants (and wholesale clubs, but I'm not near any except Costco and they won't honor Discover), but I have not been dining out at all. I will tomorrow but I don't know who's paying.

The 4% is for standard membership, if you have their credit card. You don't need executive to get it.

I guess you're right - my memory was that the Chase Freedom card usually had a quarterly cash back for restaurants or travel, but looking at 2022 and 2021 they didn't (only grocery stores).

With that said, I also hold a Chase Sapphire Reserve, which I get 3x on all restaurants and travel, which is what I was referring to. Chase Sapphire Preferred gets 3x on restaurants and 2x on other travel (and a little worse redemption).

I think you're misunderstanding- you get two separate rewards with the credit card- a 4% and a 2%. You get two checks each year- one from Costco and one from Citi. It's a total of 6% back.

Well, Citi Costco Visa does 3% on travel and restaurants and the limit is way above my usage ATM. Discover at 5% restaurants (I'd forgotten that) is in my "wallet." I have a nice wallet but lately I just keep all my CC's (that I see fit to carry and similar) in a binder clip, since I rarely carry cash.

I don't think I'm misunderstanding. My point was that you get 4% back on gas purchases with the standard Gold membership, nothing on gas by virtue of the Executive membership. Yes, two separate cash backs, although it would not seem to matter how they do it. Costco does not send you a check, they send you a certificate you need to bring to one of their warehouses for redemption by the end of the year or you forfeit the reward.

Edit: No, you don't get 6% back. You get 4% back for your within-limits gas purchases. You get 3% back by virtue of your Costco CC purchases at Costco (warehouse and online) and 2% additional for those extra if you have an Executive membership. The CC has (addition to Costco purchases, be they 4% for gas or 3% for warehouse and online) within-limits 3% via the certificate on restaurants and qualifying travel purchases.
