<< I dunno about Win2k being riddled with bugs.

The only thing that has ever caused my Win2k to crash are the stupid ass ATi beta drivers for my TV-Wonder, because ATi has their head too far up their ass to make retail drivers for a 2 year old OS.

And I've never ran SP1 or SP2. Just general release Win2k, it hasn't crashed on me at all except when I use my TV-Wonder, and that's ATi's fault not MS's. Since I stopped using that POS TV card Win2k hasn't crashed once.
>>

u are right general use with win2k and no use of other POS hardware with POS drivers will make win2k the ideal OS

Okay, so now you admit its not their problem...but you still feel the need to bitch. Very mature.

when did i ever admit that its not their problem?? i continually say it is their problem. theres not much MS can do about it cause its mainly the vendors responsibility but if vendors dont make drives for a certain MS OS, then MS most definetely feels the effects.

you sir are anandtech's newest idiot

Ok, please people. In case you haven't noticed the guy is trolling more than a bass fisherman. Just let him sit with his toy OS and play all he wants and lets just leave him to do so. K?

Geez, this discussion is just too full of very mature statements.
Since Im just too stuborn to leave threads like this be, here's my take on the various OS's.

Win9x, mostly useless, horrible memory management, horrible for networking, horrible stability(blame 3'd part programs all you want, a good OS wont allow a crappy program to take the whole system down, thats what protected memory spaces is for).

Win2K, best Windows by far, makes for decent servers, and actually a good workstation.
No real weak points, all half decent hardware out there has drivers these days, compability is pretty much equal to Win9x as long as you have a decently new computer.
Very good networking support.

Linux, the best workstation if you know what you're doing IMO.
Harder to get into, but much nicer to work with once you get going, not to mention it makes a perfect server.
Hardware compability is mostly a non issue as long as you stay with known quality components, the situation is worse if you go cheap and buy el cheapo hardware.

For the avarge user, I'd go with Win2K, I dont have the patience to teach someone Linux, unless they're willing to learn, in which case they'll probabaly do fine by themselves.
Win9x is a big no-no for anyone these days IMO, unless you have a very weak computer, in which case Win95 is the way to go.

And Stalinator, try to act a bit mature will ya?

when was i immature??? i just state the facts. can you not handle somebody that tells it like it is? can you not handle somebody that spits out the facts and weeds through the b.s.?

if your referring to the name calling, well, what do you call somebody that says "so now you admit its not their problem" after i explicitly say "it sure as hell is a problem that they have to deal w/"?

i swear the average age of a poster on this forum is 13.

I think the question is, when were you mature? You aren't stating any facts, you're stating drivel that's meant to start more flames.

<< i swear the average age of a poster on this forum is 13. >>

Well, that fact that you're obviously around 5 doesn't help the average age...

this is too funny... my take?
win2k is cool. i liked xp beta 2 better though. id be using winxp right now if it werent for my MCSE classes, in which case im using WIN2k AS. Linux was cool when i installed it, though the GUI reminded me too much of a mac. i really didnt do anything with it until i formatted my drive and put windows back on. i dont have the patience to learn linux atm, so im studying MS stuff becasue as the good ole saying goes, "You will never get fired for buying a MS product!"
i guess that was meant for IBM a while back but who cares? it still works? nothing wrong with standardization of software to make things easier in IT field. 99% of the problems i face on a day to day basis is because of 3rd party software, Can anyone say NOVELL? if MS makes things that will work as a whole than i would have no problems with never hearing the linux word again.

Haha! Yes, 99% of the problems on my school's network are caused by either Novell servers or Novell client issues. They should ban that software :|

i have a headache from reading this stuff.

I work as a consultant for my school, and i'm forced to use linux at work. The only thing I can do for fun is surf the web, and slowly at that. The software for linux is slow and buggy. After work I go home to my win2k box, which runs in 20 day blocks before I have to reboot for updates. I play counter-strike everday, have perfect mulitmonitor support, fully customizable desktop w/ hoverdesk, and literally 100's of apps that run PERFECTLY on win2k... the same can not be said for linux...
I also have win98, which I installed just in case I needed to run it(my gay A$$ sensory science ravemp 2100 mp3 player software only runs in win98). I cast my vote for win2k :)

Lesson #1 for everyone today: Stalinator is a Nef. He likes to stir up trouble. As is evidenced by his topic hell look up his old threads. Thats the only reason i poked my head in here, to see who got taken in by him. Stop arguing with him because chances are 99% of what he says is calculated to bug the $hit out of you

<< Linux is excellent for certain applications, however, as an all around OS that can play with all my hardware, run the latest games and give me a smooth internet experience, Linux ain't it. >>

so true! Linux is not for me when it comes to fun and games.. like internet.. I really hate netscape and IE is the closest thing to great out there...

Linux is good for the people who want to dig deep and have great knowledge of computers.. but it will never be a home os... that is Microsoft's releam.. and I really think that they had to release some buggy software because really, to teh home user.. if it works for most of the time, even if its slow or buggy, they will accept it. Home users just want to "do" stuff, and not have to worry about patches, or compling...

Home users are really used to crashes, I guess that is why when they use win2k or soon to be winxp and experience no crashes, they will feel like its god's gift to man..

Thank God for Sunner,

such a bright and true voice for this discussion.. I agree with your every point.. I would say win2k for anyone, but linux for the power user.. I am really trying to learn linux to set up a webserver... but damn its hard! I keep on having to ask people and read so much stuff on websites.. but its a good experience

Nope, Stallinator is a TROLL. A nef does things simply to rack up post points, a troll does it to stir up trouble.

<< Actually, if MS never existed, all of us and more would be on this board tonight, using a maddening variety of operating systems, all with their 100% W3C compliant, 100% HTML compatible open source browsers. We would be using Linux distros, BSD distros, OS/2, QNX, BeOS, and God knows which other OS'es from which other companies that Microsoft drove to bankruptcy using illegal monopolistic tactics. >>

Hate to say it, but without Big Bill, Steve Jobs and his cronies would have taken over, and we'd all be running MacOS. One important thing to remember - The average computer user needs something that runs simply on their end. They don't give a damn if the kernel is open-source, if they can't logon to their precious AOL and read their email about Aunt Bertha's boils, they're not happy. After spending the last 26 hours doing my first Linux install - Granted I spent too long because I'm installing on a 428mb HD with no CDROM, took me three distros to get one that worked installing from FTP - I will say that this is ridiculously slower then Win98SE on a p5 90 w/ 32mb. I'm running 2.2.16 and KDE and I can hardly keep myself from going batty waiting for the cursor to move.

I'm also really wondering about what will happen as Linux becomes more popular, especially with the vandals who write virii.
