The two biggest reasons why I would rather shop at Walmart is lower prices and larger selection of goods to buy. I believe in capitalism even though it has its faults. Would people spend four to five times what merchandise/goods would cost if it was made in the
good USA? I don't think so...

people mostly hate it because they can't think for themselves. They are sheep of the american liberal media. I don't hate walmart I just don't like shopping there, with the lack of open registers being the reason.

I heard walmart sometimes goes into some towns, lowers the prices to drive local mom and pop stores out of business, and then jacks up the prices once again after they have little or no competition. Thus many of the new jobs they create their are filled by people who were fired from the closed businesses, and the prices everyone is paying for things are the same if not more.

1. Walmart is paying at minimum wage or above as according to the LAW.
2. People take these jobs and understand going into it how much they are compensated and what their job will be.

Pardon me, but PLEASE explain how Walmart is doing something wrong here. That is NOT a valid argument.

"you can gurantee your Fred Meyer and other stores like that will be going out of business"

Prove this please with data to back it up.

You've provided nothing that shows they've done anything wrong. People want to bitch and say that Walmart puts mom and pop shops out of business. I'm confused here, does walmart force people to stop buying at those stores? If their customers loved the store so much and walmart provides such crappy service, why are all of these stores going out of business? ITS THE CHOICE OF THE CUSTOMER!! that's what you idiots don't understand. You always point blame at Walmart for other places closing. But the problem is those places apparently weren't that great if their customer base quits shopping there. Obviously the public has spoken.

All those $10/hr employees will need health care eventually, and this burden will shift to the homeowners in
the form of higher property taxes to cover the cost of indigent care. Yea, their employed but can you afford
a cat-scan on $10/hr alone??..no. I shop at a grocer that is higher priced than Wal-mart because they have
much better wages and benefits for their employees and their cashiers actually show up and get me out the
door much quicker..

Question: What prevents Walmart employees from getting a job somewhere else? Where exactly are they forced to take a job at Walmart?

Penn and Teller is a wonderful show, but it's a one sided view and does not promote both sides of the story.

It can be far more complicated than this. Here's a possible scenario. What happens if a guy owns a local bookstore, it's failing b/c wal-mart is selling books below cost (something mom & pop cannot do even if they wanted to so it's not true competition) and he can't afford to buy groceries at a price he used to be able to? In turn, in order to put food on the table he has to buy his groceries at low prices, putting strain on the local mom and pop grocer, and so forth. There are multiple scenarios where it doesn't just boil down to consumer choice. To just assume that we have free market dynamics working in all consumer markets is unwise imo.

The only place Wal-Mart is hated so much is this place called the internet.

There is only one person I know personally that does not shop at Wal-Mart...my mother and that is only because a close fiend of hers got denied a job there....*shrugs*...what ever works for her.

The reality of it though is that a vast majority of people out here in the real world like Wal-Mart, and actually *prefer* to shop there...and not just because of prices....personally I go for both prices and convience....I shop late at night when no one is around to bother me, and they will price match when other stores around me sometimes won't.

Wal-marts position big boy on the block is because it offers people what they want, when they want it, at at prices they want....you can say part of it is because they "strong arm" the merchants, and to some degree that is true, but the merchants do not have to work with them....they have choices but because they do such volume through Wal-Mart they are smart enough to comply.

And do not be fooled...Wal-Marts tactics towards merchants are nothing new....Kroger's has done the same thing for YEARS...so does Meijer and yes even Target...they have to to be competitive and also because the merchants will walk all over them if given a chance....I know, I used to work for Pepsi and any time they could put one over on a store, they would.

Do I like Target? Sure, but I don't have a Target near me the closest one is 30-45 minutes away and Wal-mart is 10...besides when I take Targets flyer in to Wal-Mart they pm with no problem....ever.

That?s not complicated at all?

So now Wal-Mart is to blame for his inability to run a profitable business? That's the whole gamble with owning your own business. Some succeed, some don't. Business have to learn to adapt and find a way to bring customers in. Everyone is saying how these small business provide better customer service. So what if his product cost more? I thought the fact that they provide better customer service would keep customers coming to their shops? So is it failing because Wal-mart is cheaper or because customers choose to pay less for a product than they care about customer service? You can?t have it both ways.

It?s a silly scenario of the fact that Wal-mart doesn?t sell everything below cost. They wouldn?t sell all their books below cost. They are cheaper because they negotiate a better deal because of the sheer size of their volume and sales. They are the largest buyer in the world. But who?s to blame for that? The few guys on ATOT that hate Wal-Mart? Or the billions of customers they have each year. If it?s so bad, people simply wouldn?t shop there.

Don't like the people shopping there, it's always the bottom feeders looking for the lowest price for cheap junk. Plus products are bad and presentation is mediocre. Walmart is a damaged brand as far as I am concerned. It's like shopping at Payless shoes.
I'd rather go to Target for more upscale shopping experience at an insignificant, to me, price difference.

This is where I'm confused. 90% of the stuff at our Wal-Mart is all name brand stuff just like Target. They do have their own product line, but what's the difference in buying Dove soap from Walmart vs. Target? How is it a bad product and WTF do I care about presentaiton? Are you serious? It's on a shelf with a price below it! How does that make the product any better.

I will say that I live in a very nice town by the lake and our Super Wal-mart is nothing but soccer mom MILFS and those type. It's ultra clean and the people are really nice. So I can't say that it's bottom feeders, but I'm sure some of them are.

Target is much better for home decorations and clothing. We love Target also, but have no problems with Wal-Mart. I just don't understand the hatred sometimes.

Why don't you people understand Target sells the same cheap junk Wal-Mart does? What does presentation matter when the exact same item is 10 to 20% cheaper. If you like throwing away money, fine. The rest of us will save that money and use it for better things.

I shop at both Target and Wal-Mart. Some things Target is actually competitive on and it makes driving across the street worth the savings.

I see your point, and it makes sense in many situations. To be honest though, it may be inapplicable in several markets Wal-mart enters, included many small towns, some overseas locations, etc. One model doesn't fit all scenarios and it's unwise to generalize that. You are assuming for example that the time frame is long enough from Wal-mart market entry to allow these storesto make significant changes as well as market those changes to the consumer market (as well as go through the cycle to regain profitability or retain profitibility and account for those marketing costs) Re: the scenario though, to create the domino effect, they don't need to sell everything below cost, that is the whole point.

I am not saying I dislike or like Wal-Mart, nor have I found mom and pop stores to have good service. However to assume they (or any large store) work within the bounds of a fair and equitable free market everywhere they go is very naive.

Well, I don't know about your super duper Walmart, but at our Walmart, it's all bottom feeders, and frankly I don't have the patience to stand in line behind 5 single moms with 20 kids. And then on the way out, have one of their "associates" check my bag to make sure I didn't steal some cheap junk from them. That kind of stuff would have been OK when I was a poor kid living in my grandparents garage, but I worked hard and became successful to escape just this sort of ghetto experience. When I go to Target, I feel good about shopping there, they know how to run a store in a much more classy way. That good feeling to me is worth whatever pennies I pay more to buy soap at Target over Walmart. Yes, if I was a welfare queen with 5 kids, then I would shop at Walmart too, because then every penny counts. But when you are a successful adult, you can afford to pay a little more to have a more pleasant experience.

Retailers like Wal Mart are directly responsible for poor working conditions, lead paint in toys, etc, because they are the ones who push hard for that 1 cent lower cost per item. Because of their enormous size, they have a huge bargaining advantage, and the Chinese manufacturer has no choice but to comply

Wrong

The only ones to blame for substandard products from Chinese companies are the companies themselves and the Chinese Government. The Chinese government is the one responsible for poor working conditions in it's country. They could pass sweeping labor laws like we have here but refuse to do so because the cheap labor gives them a huge resource to build wealth quickly.

If you are going to assign blame for this on Wal-Mart, then you need to point the finger at Target and all other retailers because they all buy the same Chinese junk. You also need to point the finger at yourself. You would be amazed at how many things you buy/own are from China.
